a bit too repetitive

thank you for listening! yeah repetition is a problem of
mine i'm on the road to fixing, slowly but surely.

evil lies hidden in the forest

Really nice and atmospheric. In my opinion the first thing
anyone says about music that is posted on the board these
days is that it is repetative. Ignore it. The introduction
of the fast break I liked, then the move into the downtempo
beats comes in about the right place. I am not sure whether
I like the second fast break bit, it felt unnecessary to me,
although I have to admit I am not really in the mood for
fast music at the moment, so I may feel differently about it
when I am.

Obviously the bit rate makes it difficult to comment on the
dynamics, but overall I like the track.

Listening the the next one...

just when you think its over

Starts well, nice beat, I like the contrast as the track
goes on, although the little intricate drum parts (a few
seconds every so often) leaves me feeling as though you
should have really developed a section based around them
instead of falling back on the loops. It is good, just left
me wanting more :P

Listening to the next one.

thank you! i wanted to make something that changed between
two completely different sounds. that's sort of the sound
i'm going for now. i like to blend genres.

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-07-25 14:03 [#00793912]
Points: 9601 Status: Lurker

yeah, i've been bigger on melody lately, so i've sort of had
a habit for falling back on it a lot. i plan to do more with
the intricate loops in the future. that used to be all i
did.

justified electronic columns

The strings sound a little processed, they could do with
sounding more natural. Not a bad melody though, builds up
some nice tension...but where are the drums. I was waiting
and waiting...personally I would add some percussion (it is
nice as it is but different versions wouldn't hurt), and the
way you have structured it you could go and put in a really
harsh drill track or a really subtle drum beat. Overall
good work :D

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-07-25 14:08 [#00793921]
Points: 9601 Status: Lurker

thank you very much sir! columns was actually an ambient
track i twiddled around with, i plugged my keyboard into my
Digitech RP7 and just let it come out. I've actually thought
about a drum beat in there... i just have to get the timing
down, and i don't know what sort of beat to put in.

offline Sanguine from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-07-25 14:41 [#00794002]

Just when you think - punchier snares needed, some pop to
the beat. Catchy beat for the beginning, goes on just a bit
too long, not enough after the first break, just one 16 bar
with the heavy distortion? You flip between heavy beats and
the ambient breaks really quickly, kills the energy fast

Sounds very looped, like Asche said, the transitions are
choppy, they don't flow into each other (although they still
sound good in most places), but after you hear that 4 or
five times since you transition so much, it gets repetitive.
Would like to hear more progression, not just playing with
loops and effects, some direction with the piece.

offline Sanguine from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-07-25 14:49 [#00794023]
Points: 859 Status: Lurker

Evil forest - I like the start, simple, the melody sort of
catching up the the drum beat as it goes along... right
before the drill part comes in though, that transition needs
some major cleaning up or total rethought, same when it
comes in later.

Does a much better job of keeping the energy up as the beat
changes, and a good transition back into the lighter stuff.

There isn't a whole lot of overall progression to the piece,
you could cut the piece in half and it would still sound
about the same. Still sounds very looped, ut you're making
the best of it, maybe head like Orbital with the eccentric
live loop performance.

i listened to justified electronic columns, and it's really
just the seed of a track. it certainly could grow into
something complete, and suggests some interesting
possibilities.

what i think in a bit.

offline Skink from A cesspool in eden on 2003-07-26 17:14 [#00794771]

Ok, Evil forest i like the slow bits alot but the drill bits
need alot of work.

Just when you think it's over i really like the beats with
the little complex bits but i didn't like the distorted bit
much but i think out of the three you put up on that site i
like this one the best.

Justified electronic columns i liked but i think it could do
with more ambience because it's one of those tracks that
needs an atmosphere.

Overall i think this is good work but there is one thing
that bothered me a little throughout and thats the sound of
the recordings they sound a bit overdriven, was that
intentional?

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-07-26 21:03 [#00794850]
Points: 9601 Status: Lurker

do you mean overdriven as in volume or distortion?

offline Skink from A cesspool in eden on 2003-07-26 21:12 [#00794857]
Points: 7483 Status: Lurker

Volume, it sounds like it's clipping alot and i think
detracts from the overall quality a bit.

oic. the freeware i use is actually based off old analog
drum machines, so it adds pops sometimes at the beginning of
loops. i've been working on ways of fixing this....

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-07-26 21:21 [#00794861]

also, i keep all of my songs in high-quality mono wav file
form. i noticed a slight decrease in sound quality with the
switch. the mp3's are a meg or so a piece, but the original
wav recordings are 20 or more each, at least.

I did earlier, thanks for reminding me of that.

Hmm, i'm going to have to be honest, i didn't like them very
much they didn't seem to gel for me, I can't really be
anymore objective on those it's not something i go for i'm
afraid.

Just out of interest, have you heard anything i've done?

damn it! my realplayer's being a fucking bastard. piece of
shit. anyways, i'll try to get a listen to it, if i can get
my real to start working proper again... i might have to do
some shutdown action.

well it's just that i have a shitty phone connection, and if
i'm going to be downloading something, especially a
high-quality sound file, it'll take forever. One good mp3 is
about anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes for me. :-(

i know what i did now - i tried to adjust the performance so
the tracks would rebuffer less... i hate it when i'm getting
into a song and it fucks up!

well i'll try it ASAP tomorrow. i'm going to sleep now -
been doing yard work out in the hot fucking texas sun all
day so the weariness is setting in. good night and sweet
dreams, my fellow musician.

okay! i listened to that lucid skies remix. i dig it! very
atmospheric, lots of subtle ambient undertones, and plenty
of variety. the song shifts to a lot of different moods, but
the shifts really give this song a personality. i could
chill to this.

nicely done. :-D
