David Lynch

I've just watched 4 Lynch movies in a row:

Mulholland Drive
Lost Highway
Eraserhead
Blue Velvet.

I liked them all, bar Blue Velvet (I think it COULD have
been great, but truely piss- poor acting by the lead
character and some really dodgey script put me off)

My favorite was Mulholland Drive-great direction, amazing
camera work, nice and fucked (but not too fucked) and once
you work out the story, it's even better.

If there are any Lynch fans here, what's your favorite movie
by him and why?

What should I check out next if I'm into this style?

Cheers.

Count me in. I'm not going to tell you my favorite, though.

Have you watched Being John Malkovich?

that

No I haven't. Is it weird and complicated and interesting?
;)

Btw, I'm interested in any good movies, by Lynch or not.

Oh come on tell me your favorite! :P

No! But that was the first movie with a similar style that
came to mind.

it wasn't weird in the same way lost highway, mulholland
drive, blue velvet were in my opinion (i haven't seen
eraserhead). i thought it was more funny

Blue Velvet was funny unintentionally. I was really
dissapointed with it...it ended up being pointlessly wicked
and sometimes very cringeworthy.

i've only seen mulholland drive. after i watched it 8
times...then cheated and read a synopsis on the web...i can
say i thoroughly enjoyed it.

as for being john malkovich, if you liked that you should
check out those folks' newest flick Adaptation. i enjoyed
it all the way up till the ending, which was a huge let
down. still not a bad film though.

I'm a big Lynch fan. seen them all.

best thing is to watch Twin Peaks next and after that Fire
Walk With Me.

especially Fire Walk With Me will blow your brains.

I really liked it.

it's the scariest Lynch I've seen. one of the weirder ones
too.

but you need to have watched the series first.

My favorite is Mulholland Dr., I think it had better
dialogue and acting than the other Lynch films I've seen.
Plus Rebekah Del Rio performing an acoustic, spanish version
of Orbison's "Crying" was just the icing on the cake.

One Lynch scene that always cracks me up is when Mr. Eddie
kicks that tailgater's ass in Lost Highway.

blue velvet is great, kyle mclachlan rocks (gotta love that
chicken walk). but heineken -- fuck that shit...all about
pabst blue ribbon.

though my favorite lynch movie is hands down fire walk with
me. you really can't beat that.

The Twin Peaks pilot is the greatest ever, followed by Fire
Walk With Me. Followed by MD. Followed by WAH.

Lynch is God. And interesting enough, I've noticed a whole
lot of "IDM" listeners are way into his movies.

offline MrGerbik from United States on 2003-07-24 01:38 [#00791665]

CS2x: go rent Eraserhead. It'll blow your mind... like a
direct view into the Lynch world. Nothing like it. Hard to
watch, but you'll never forget it.

BTW... Stanley Kubrick called Eraserhead one of the greatest
films ever made... that's a hell of an endorsement.

offline MrGerbik from United States on 2003-07-24 01:41 [#00791666]
Points: 392 Status: Lurker

Oh duh... I just saw that you already watched EH.

The next thing you need to get into is Twin Peaks, without a
doubt. Its a commitment, but youll be hooked.

mimi: Wild At Heart you couldnt even make it through??
That's a great flick! Hysterical stuff... punk rock Lynch.
Some of the best one-liners ever.

offline MrGerbik from United States on 2003-07-24 01:45 [#00791667]
Points: 392 Status: Lurker

BTW, it's a shame you didn't get into Blue Velvet. But the
things you pointed out you didn't like about it were done on
purpose. The ridiculous naivety of certain characters is
essential to the story.

"Why are there people like Frank?!"

i think you missed the point with kyle mclachlan in blue
velvet. his acting is intentionaly "hammy" during the first
part of the film, to emphasize his naivety. as he is sucked
in to the world of the criminals his acting changes and
becomes far more realistic.

its similar to the girl in mullholland drive (the one who
wants to be an actress, i forget her name), when she arrives
in hollywood for the first time. but again her acting style
changes gradualy as she becomes involved in the darker side
of hollywood.

i'd say mullholland drive and lost highway are my 2
favourites. i realy like the straight story aswell, very
different style to his other work, not a backwards talking
dwarf in sight!

and what about "Dune"? ;o)

he was asked to work with Lucas on "Return of the Jedi"-
that would have been funny...

and the man behind "adaptation" and "being as..." is Spike
Jonze.

if you like David you should check von Trier's "riget"
series.

highway soundtrack one of the best ever soundtracks btw
saw the elephant man just recently, really liked that.
eraserhead makes me kind of sick

what is the "riget" series?

i realy like breaking the waves and dancer in the dark by
von trier, great films, if a little depressing. didnt go
much on the idiots though. id like to see some other dogme
95 films.

"mulholland" is an easier-to-get-into "lost hoghway" version
IMHO
the main problem is different of course but the form of
these two is pretty similar (two stories- real and
"dreams-imagination")

"riget"- i dont know how it was translated- in Poland it was
named "kingdom". a bit scarry, satanic film about a
hospital, ghosts and mad people. very good- something like
"twin peaks"+hospital-based soap opera.

blue velvet is one of my favorites.

the acting is mello dramatic on purpose. they are supposed
to be stupid highschool teenagers with delusions of
grandure. Dennis Hopper is fucking great in it. Lara
dern's crying scene is a little much though.

you may be dissapointed if you expect something like his
other films. its VERY different. its a very simple story,
based more on emotions than plot. it has a beautiful
soundtrack aswell.

I've only seen Mulholland Drive...

But I absolutely loved it. Such a great mood
throughout... I love the deep rumbling bass too - that's
awesome.

Think I'll check out Lost Highway next time I'm at the
store. Are all these on DVD, btw? (I know Mulholland Drive
is).

yes, and not on the plays and stories about the guy. makes
you wonder why he wanted to make it: maybe to express the
well known feeling of being an outcast. i don't have problem
with over the top emotion and stuff anymore recently: move
me! that goes for music as well

Well, I will give Blue Velvet another chance. I was aware of
the fact the characters started out hammy on purpose, but I
guess it was a little too cringeworthy in places (especially
the bits with him and the girl in the car...)

I prefer his more modern style (Mulholland Drive, Lost
Highway) though I also loved Eraserhead-wonderful and insane
and abstract.

Thanks for all the info people-I think I'll get into Twin
Peaks, though I missed it while it was on TV...could I just
buy Fire Walk With Me and enjoy it without understanding it?
I mean, I STILL don't get Lost Highway at all.

you could just buy Fire Walk With Me. but you'll be missing
out on a lot of the mythology of the series. it actually is
scarier if you do know what things relate to.

if you have the dough, buy the first season of TP on dvd..!

Dune is weird. The first half of the movie follows the book
almost letter for letter. Then about half way through it
starts skipping over large parts of the story and really
butchering it in general. All in all it is a lot better
aesthetically than the sci-fi channels version, even if
sci-fi's followed the book more closely (from what I have
heard . .I couldn't watch much of it).
