so, i'm creating music now for about a year, and i came to
the conclusion that i want to get some "real" hardware
stuff, not only more emulators on the pc.
but in the great forest of synthesizers, and other stuff,
it's kinda difficult for me to choose.
i would want something quite cheap (about 200 dollars or
less)(used of course), that i could make some noise with.
now, i know that some of you have some experience in these
things. could anybody recommend me something or share his
thoughts about that ?

Korg 05/RW. Its what I've got its a great synth module. 40
internal effects, plenty of sounds, plenty of good drums
sounds, massive bend range for wicked pitch shifting effects
on drums. Of course you'll need a PC keyboard to do bending.

I bought mine in '98 for £299 reduced from £500 but
probably worth what I paid for it. I think they're worth
about £150 now.

i just bought a microKORG, and i must say it's pretty
cool...$400, 128 programs, loads of effects and *GASP* a
VOCODER

it's pretty neat, the vocoder isn't all that great, but you
can get quite a range of sounds from it

get an MC-303 (not a TB-303) it'll do everything u need,
imagine fruity loops in a box with knobs on

MC-303 sounds a little too toy-like for some though - Good
sequencer, but very digital sounding.
I'd go for something like the Waldorf Pulse - They're dirt
cheap second-hand these days - Something like that
compliments a software setup perfectly being real
analogue... Much deeper basses, much more presense in a mix,
can do acid lines much more convincingly than any
softsynth/digital box, much more hands-on...
I'd certainly go for something analogue and see how you get
on with it.

Try and get a 2nd hand roland sh101 for some nice analogue
sounds, the korg 05r/w is a small halfrack module I beleive.
you need a midi keyboard to use it, (or midi out cable from
pc and a sequencer).I was thinking of getting one, mainly
because you can process external sounds through it(I
beleive). I wouldn't bother with some of the cheaper units,
but perhaps a EF303 or MC09 by roland would be good. I would
also recommend the new UB series of mixers by behringer and
perhaps one of those electribe boxes by korg(although I'm
not a fan, many are). the yamaha smaller samplers are
supposed to be quiet good, but again im not a fan, really you
should save up a bit of money and get a decent 2nd hand akai
or emu unit.preferbly an akai s3000 or above if you can
afford it. also get a cheap akai mpc2000 if you find one,
because they are great drum machines(you supply the drum
samples from fx cds or from your own recordings/samples).
very popular in the hiphop world, but great for electronic
as well.the best bet for decent cheap gear is 2nd hand
stuff.if its been well looked after and not used on the road
out gigging, but in the studio, it should be almost as good
as new and provide you with a great tool.
