Warp vs Rephlex

I've lost a lot of interest in Warp, a lot of their
releases don't get me so excited anymore. I think that
Rephlex are far more dope and are a much cooler label.

Hopefully with realeses such as the new LFO album and Chris
Clark's new album, that should set Warp back on track.

But i agree. Some of the stuff coming out of Rephlex is
killer

I just hope the downloaded copy of Chris Clarks new album I
heard is a fake...it sounds like a step back from ceramics.

I just think there is far more buzz about Rephlex now than
Warp. I don't really get excited about Warp stuff much now.
Rephlex for me has taken over as number one cool electronic
music label.

what did rephlex release in the last few months that's worth
buying?

Stakker, DJ Scud, Lory D come on please? I know Warp are
good but their shit is getting too airy fairy. I like my
shit hard and basically Rephlex deliver.

Too bad the rephlex website is completely incoherent.

catharsis,

Yeah it is bad. I think that they just need to give the
words a lighter colour like cream or white so you can read
it.

Honestly the new ae stuff, didn't do a lot for me. Too
obscure. Not that I wouldn't listen to it.

warp are positioning themselves to cater to a larger
audience. this is a good move. they are broadening and
becoming more diverse.

rephlex has always been a dope label but warp is thinking
long term with the music they are releasing lately.

this is a good thing.

depends... if aphex releases along with ae´s , plaid´s,
boc´s and squarepusher´s keep coming from warp, I will
still prefer warp

I'm digging ae's newer stuff actually - I went off them for
quite a while though...
I find warp a little too bland these days - Doesn't seem
like they're taking any risks these days or releasing
anything too interesting - They put out some obscure
sounding stuff, but it's starting to feel a little
contrived...
Rephlex are definetly a lot more interesting to me these
days - I actually really like their web site, reminds me of
the mid 90's when electronic music was still kind of
underground - The only problem with Rephlex is they take so
long to release anything...
I'm getting more and more into Planet Mu these days
I seriously think warp need to be getting back to their
electronic roots (they seem to be stuff in this late 90's
post trip hop thing a lot of the time) - Otherwise I can see
them becoming pretty predictable and lame.
Warp and Mu are definetly leading the way these days IMO.

it seems so silly to argue over warp and rephlex. there are
so many other labels, and really you can pick and choise
from all of them.

rephlex has been doing some decent re-releases, but they're
just re-releases. warp has had some excellent releases i
think.

but like many folks mention, i'm just as or more excited to
hear whats coming out on merck, morr, zod, neo-ouija,
schematic, toytronic, planet-mu, peaceoff, drischi, etc etc
etc

comes out (if still on warp) im pretty sure i'll vote for
warp

the only label with releases i'm looking forward to really
is addict...

doormouse-skelechairs 12", b/w snares remix and snares
doormouse megamix

doormouse vs abelcain 12". one track by each, one remix of
the other by each

well. i dont mind really...as long as he releases one

i cant see squarepusher, aphex or autechre staying with warp
much longer, warp have grown into a pretty controlling label
and these three artists need artistic licence that i dont
think warp will be able to offer for much longer

offline J Swift from United Kingdom on 2003-07-17 14:42 [#00783862]

I always get the impression warp needs aphex and ae too much
to dare mess with them in any way.. But it also seems like
warp are stuck in a bit of an era and aren't taking
chances/pushing electronic music anymore.
I didn't really like that whole trip hop era (apart from
ISDN), that's what warp still remind me of most the time -
1996/7

Mu is good but Rephlex I find have more soul and funk in the
stuff they release. But Mu is very good though. I think Zod
are a bit second rate though.

roygbivcore,

They're okay. I've heard most of the Zod stuff and its
fairly forgetable. I mean its fresh and makes a change.
Maybe I need to listen to that stuff again.

Mu seems too much like "Hey, this is an electronic label,
buy our shit because it is good."

Rephlex seems to be "hey we thought this shit sounded good
so we have released it"

So Rephlex is cooler than Mu, if only for the attitude of
the label. It is also the least professional label I have
ever seen, which adds to the coolness.

rephlex are wicked - they never comprimise - they release 1
or 2 excellent records a month and there are only about 2
people working thee or so .
they're always different with every release and they never
get boring + you don't hear rephlex stuff on all the adverts
and their records are cheape than other labels

All the same when I think of Electronic Record labels I can
hardly remember any. When I think of Electronic labels 4
usually come to mind Warp, Rephlex, Planet-Mu and Breakin'
Records.

on a longterm basis warp has been much better and expanded
my tastes for me in a way
at the moment neither does anything for me

I'm sure if I push myself and can remember more. But really
there are like 4 top records labels for me. Probably you
could exclude Breakin' but a lot of those other labels don't
seem to have the same profile as the forementioned or they
just don't stick in my head.

What the hell happened to Akin and Irdial Discs anyways
seeing as you brought them up?
