The Sgt. Pepper Album of Ambient Music

The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld has often been
called The Sgt. Pepper album of ambient music. I gave it a
good listen yesterday and must say that I really think it
deserves the position and status it has been given. In other
words: a definite classic!

A funny term, I must say, "the Sgt. Pepper album
of...'insert genre'.." The Beatles' very own Sgt. Pepper
album has been called the Citizen Kane of pop music...
*lol*

Makes me think about other genres' Sgt. Peppers:

Punk: Sex Pistols - Never mind the bollocks.

Drum and bass: Goldie - Timeless

Electronica: Kraftwerk - Computer World

Dreampop: Insides - Euphoria

Well, thats some suggestions...feel free to bring on some
more...

(....God, I'm bored!!! and dehydrated and stuck at work and
wanting to be ANYWHERE else.....)

No better choices for ambient? I've always been distinctly
unimpressed by the Orb, myself.

Music For Bondage Performance for the Sgt Pepper of noise?
Unless anyone can think of a better one... I'm not as wised
up on the genre as I'd really like to be.

Drum and bass: Goldie - Timeless **

could be but I prefer modus operandi (photek)

or even new forms by roni size

Smiley Smile by the Beach Boys was better than Sgt. Pepper,
no doubt. Only some of the Lennon tracks, and the Harrison
track were any good on that album. Incredibly over-rated
album.

I always prefered Orbus Terrarum. Any of you guys heard the
new orb "bicycles and tricycles"? Its pretty good (minus a
few boring tunes) and a lot better than cydonia - the tune
hell's kitchen is excellent and sounds like something
straight off SAW1

meaning shoegaze is a genre of music? I am lost.

offline alnuit on 2003-07-17 06:45 [#00782946]
Points: 1113 Status: Lurker

Well...if you are familiar with the 'shoegazer'
sound...dream pop is close to that...basically it is highly
textured rock guitar based fuzzy noise soundscapes. The
melodies are generally melancholy and lyrics are mostly of
the sadder kind. The vocals are generally buried deep in the
mix...

It is not a clear genere...it has influences from
slowcore...post-punk and ambient pop. Artists like Low,
Mazzy Star and Galaxie 500 can be considered either slowcore
or dreampop.

For a better idea of the music and the
srtists...go here

its called shoegaze cause all the singers did was stand
sulkily looking at their feet in a adolescent teenager kinda
way, julee cruise (who did stuff on the excellent twin
peaks) is another example of this...

this isn't a technical name for a genre though is it? Sounds
like something you can up with...

Well...it is technical...or about as technical as any genere
name is...I mena...honestly...IDM ? :P

You can actually go into a store (or atleast back in 1991
you could) and ask for these artsits and trust your record
store guy to give it to you. So I guess it is an accepted
reference point.

I guess dreampop is shoegaze with added electronica. In my
view Insides perfected that genre with their euphoria-album,
released on the 4ad sisterlabel Guernica in 1993. You should
all check out that album, it's pure balm for the soul!

heh, we had a thread a while ago all about core genres...
all you have to do is add core after anything, and you have
a genre! :)
