 | This is the first time I have ever done a track like this...at the moment it is literally only the basics of a
new track, however I have been experimenting with drum
programming. I suppose the style it most closely resembles
is VSnares on WITBOAS...so as such I have called my demo
track Summer In The Stomach Of a Lizard.

 You can get it here

I would appreciate any feedback on whether you think the
drums/bleeps are any good, or whether I should just quit :D

 Gracias amigos :P

 | ask and ye shall receive. generally...
keeping in mind that this is a kernel of a demo, and not a
complete track, of course you need to spend a lot more time
building a memorable melody. right now it's a very basic
skeleton. personally, i liked what sounds like a lightly
tweaked vibraphone sample, but i did not like the stereo
 echo reverb effect.

the rhythm programming, to my ears, is choppy and needs to
be both tightened and loosened up.

perhaps the greatest difficulty in using this sort of style
is achieving "expressiveness" when there are so many
lockstep squeaks and blips flying past. have you tried
switching back and forth between time signatures? i'd like
to hear some syncopation to break up the space.

i would suggest programming the kick drum alone with the
vibes, aiming for a groove with unpredictable syncopation.
then, build your drill patterns using the kick as a rhythmic
foundation. i realize that the drill sound often aims for a
free jazz freakout effect, but it sounds to me like you want
it to be tighter, explosive but flowing, at the edge of
chaos but with a white-knuckle groove driving things, a la
 afx or squarepusher.

you get extra points for not using that amen break, or any
other sampled break (which i love, really, but is such an
 awful cliché).

what did you use to make this? i would guess reason.
another approach would be to program a ton of short phrases,
and then use those as building blocks for longer phrases.

 quit? never!

btw, can we come out of the lizard's stomach now? it smells
 funny in here...

 | Man that is some feedback...thanks :D!!!
I agree with everything you say...to be honest the synth was
just there to give some contrast for the beats. I am
basically only just starting out with drill so I need more
practise with the sequencing, obviously I will try what you
have suggested (good food for thought).

 Thanks again :)

 | I quite like it. It could be improved with something weird, some sort of something that makes it's construction original
and weirdified. Right now the burst of percussion sounds
come right after the other in a sort of on/off/on/off fire
sequence, so maybe spacing of the sounds could be more
interesting and less checkerboard. The sounds of the
sounds were quite good though. Nice variation, though not as
much as otto von zorak and they sound good too though not as
weirdified with detail as ooter vorn schirach.

 | Is that an absynth preset I'm hearing? I'm pretty sure it is. If not, it sounds 100% similair to an absynth sound. The
'melody' (if you wanna call it a melody) sounds very forced,
especially the last 2 notes of the theme. You really need to
make it sound more natural and of course add some other
 instruments.
The drumbeat is allright, but it's 100% VSnares on WITBOAS
like you said. You'd have a go by spreading this track
around the internet claiming it's a rare vsnares track or
you might wanna create your own sound instead of fully
 imitating someone else.
I don't mean to sound harsh, you're a nice guy, but this is
too much of an imitation to me. You have the skills, now
 make it yours!

 | spreading fake tracks, pretending they are by other popular people, sounds like a fun hobby. You could make the track
very similar to their style (like madonna or something) then
get a voice impersonator to say something
humiliation/embarrassing/ (as if she were madonna), ha ,
like make up some bizarre political view she has and make
her track all ablaze with it, just barely staying out of the
realm of being too ludicrous to believe as a real track.

 | Woo, thanks for all the comments peeps :D!!
Nexus 6, your comment is the best comment I could have
received :D As I said earlier in the thread the synth is
there purely as a something for the beats to lie against...I
didn't even think about it, just used 6 keys on the keyboard
to do it in less than a minute.

As for the beats I was purposely aiming to emulate VSnares
sound because his style is the most basic drill I have
heard. Now I can move on from here and introduce my own
 originality into it.

The main thing I wanted to get from this is whether people
thought it sounded authentically drill, if that makes
 sense.

I am chuffed though that so many of you replied. Thanks
 again :D!!!!

I was hoping you'd say that. It is indeed very important
that, from here, you'll add your own originality, because
the creativity is good. I'll be waiting for the melodies.
That will eventually tell me if you're able to do it or not.

 | i thort this track was really cool, Lee!
The vibraphone sounds really nice, maybe make the
ping-pong-delay-thing out of time with the piece, so there
are cross rhythms that are not rhythmical at all, adding to
the disorientating effect. Maybe make each key 'echo' at a
slightly different rate to the next.

drums almost sound spot on, but like paul said WHERE'S THE
 DISTORTION?? :D

imitating someone is always a good way to learn a new style,
then just gotta develop away from it and make ur own - like
 u said :)

 | Rappers would be particularly good targets because their music typically contains lots of expressive words anyway, so
making up your own wouldn't seem terribly suspicious to an
 audience.

 | Sure there'd be a great urge to make an appearance from barney, but that would be too unbelievable and the ultimate

 | There really needs to be an official "troll website". So you can upload snoops impercination/ ideas about the fake track/
ideas to destroy the internet/ ideas of marvelous schemes
and pranks/ ideas to destroy humanity in a humorous way etc
 etc.
