Mac Music Makers - Question

Howdy,

Got myself a Evolution MK-225C today; awesome little
machine, happy as hell with it. Turned out after asking for
all my advice on here one of my workmates is a huge
midi-head and said the keyboard ruled way more over the
Oxygen - so cheers to all :-)

(Curiously, on my Windows XP machine, programs map the piano
keys completely wrong [white keys are sometimes where black
keys are, vice versa] but I'll figure it out...)

I've been playing with Reason under OS X on my 500 - eats up
plenty of CPU. Is it reccomended/not recommended these days
to use OS 9 for audio stuff? i.e. any faster, better/worse
MIDI/ASIO drivers, better/worse application features, etc?

Saving up to buy Logic 6 today, got offered a nice pack for
$600AU which looks rad.

Have you installed the Windows XP drivers? and if so make
sure you haven't accidently changed the octave on the
keyboard because that can happen :P

I told you the evo was a decent keyboard :D

Yeah, I've installed the Windows XP drivers - nothing wanted
to talk to the keyboard until I did it. The mac picked it
up straight away, where with XP I had to go into Device
Manager and 'update driver' on the audio/usb devices.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but it's still doing wierd
things.

No big deal anyway, I'll mainly be using it on my mac; just
want to make things run nicely, so wondering whether I stick
with OSX or start using OS9 again for this stuff...

G3 or G4? how much ram u got on it?? can't have enough of
that stuff it seems.

been playing around with reason meself, grande fun that
stuff is.

i'd say macosX be the better, OMS can be a bit of a bitch,
plus isn't logic 6 osX native?

Mac OS 9 is the best if 500 hhz is what you have to play
with, X isn?t as snappay as 9 on 2x 1,42 Ghz even!

With the right apps Mac OS 9 is just as crash proof as X
(eh, almost anyway - without the crazy X CPU load)

really? a 2x1.42 ??? i thought osX would have taken
advantage of the dual processor? mm..

anyway .. i run os9 for music, and its pretty hassle free.

g4 500mhz, 784mb ram. osx isn't slow or anything (apart
from the lack of quartz extreme; my video card blows), just
i know from experience os9 is a million times faster, and
most audio stuff i've seen on a mac has been in os9.

(although this was a while ago; curiously i'm wondering
whether its because most applications were only osx'ed
recently)....

would love to hear from anybody here that does their music
making on a mac... what their specs are... and what they
use...

youre buying logic?

you must really have it in your mind to spend some money!

like I said... you dont need it as a beginner... youre not
even sure if you are 100% about this.

But whatever, I was trying to save you money.

well, not buying it yet, but saving. doesn't mean i'm
actually /going/ to... but yeah, still taking your advice
into count.

got reason 2.0 as well today; seems pretty rad, more toys in
it than 1 had. only problem is i can't remember how to
bloddy use it :(

xf:

here in nz they have student discounts (i think just
tertiary) for some audio applications eg. cubase and i'm
pretty sure logic [and other stuff like photoshop etc]. ..
might be worth investigating? i got my copy of cubase vst a
while back for 360 nz$ !! (down from the 1000 something it
was)
