 | OK, the topic title is deliberately attention-seeking, so I apologise for that.

Basically, I have a track that I have been working on for
quite a while, and I can't decide whether it's finished or
if it needs more work, so....... I would really value the
opinion of people from the messageboard.

It's called "Chimneys (Shinobi Mix)", and it's available
 here: http://stage.vitaminic.com/manicminer

I'd like to know a) if you think it's finished, b) if you
like it, and c) if the answer to (a) is "no", then what
should I add/change about the track?

Please take the time to do this. For reasons that I shan't
go into it's really important that I finish the track and I
am really, really incredibly bad at deciding whether or not
my tracks are finished or not.

 Cheers in advance.

 | i like it, but i'm not sure it is 'finished'... maybe i'd add more things and enlarge the sound width (eh, it doesn't
mean anything probably), i don't know if it's possible i
don't know shit about technics of music making °_°
advise from a musicmaker would be more welcome than mine...
 =)

 it's a pleasant listen nonetheless!

 | Thanks man.....
In terms of sound "width", that's certainly something that
needs finishing. It hasn't been mastered yet, and I am
unable to do it until I am back in England. At the moment I
am writing music in Lithuania using shitty laptop speakers
 and some wanky headphones......

Glad you liked it though! What things do you think I need
to add? Is it long enough?

 | ok =)
in terms of length, it is good! long enough.
what to add... more elements/layers/sounds, i have no clear
idea, it all depends on what you want the track to sound
 like! ' _ '

 | *start mindless comment sequence* hmmm... too much reverb on bass, crank up the mids on it a
bit - drums need sharpening - mixing on the little drill bit
is great - bass pulse at about 1:10 could use a bit less LP,
reverb - maybe a nice hi-hitting lead would really help?part
at 2:25 and on it really good - like the little delay youve
got there - and the bass riff is nice - but the drums might
be mad good if they kicked in shortly after the lead fades
away at around 2:48 instead of the longer pause - sysnths
are good - nice mix on the reso pad - the drum kick in w/
lead is real good - bits of drill that poke through are like
teasing maybe try and get it to come in more? add a little
one bar drill fill at the end of a measure maybe?

all in all - great stuff - a few minor changes and that
track could rock some serious ass man - good job :)

 | Thanks man :)
This is what I'm looking for - I need advice like that.
It's so difficult to "hear" what needs changing in a track
that you've been working on for ages......

I'll certainly have a fiddle around and implement some of
the changes you have suggested, together with those that
 other board members suggest (please?!)

i hate it when people say: "oh, its good." and then dont
elaborate - or even "it sucks" and dont elaborate.

headphones as a microphone to record some stuff but it
 didn't work.
 What am I doing wrong?

 | Okay I dont think that the track is done yet. I big problem with the ending (besides that it sounds like it just gets
cut off) is that -to me- the melodies that you have aren't
enough on their own to carry the track from beginning to
end. I'd try to add more chord changes and some more
melodies. The result would give the track more emotion and a
more definitive ending. This is all my opinion of course,
but good luck with your song. Cheers.

 | The track opens up really stongely for me, at 1:50 it sort of becomes mediocre until about 2:50...then...nice tension
 build-up...drums not bad.

I can't make out whether the melodies are the problem or the
synths you have used. It sounds like a modern old school
menacing drum and bass track (if that makes sense) but
there is just something missing from making it truely
 menacing.

 | yeah i agree, either make it prettier by adding more melodies or make it more dark and menacing. Right now its
 kinda inbetween the two.
