A couple of months back Cameron said he was going to do it,
it was just a case of deciding if it would be his next movie
or the one after.

"You mean the most successful movie of all time? Yes, I saw

that."

I just wanted to say I thought this was hilarious. Oh and
fair play evolume, right on all counts :)

Why did you think it was hilarious?

Well since when is popularity indicative of quality? Note on
the IMDB that Titanic's average is 6.9 out of ten. The top
ten grossing movies of all time - Titanic, Harry Potter 1,
Harry Potter 2, LOTR 2, Jurassic Park, LOTR 1, Independance
Day, Phantom Menace, The Lion King and The Matrix Reloaded -
I'd say 4 of them are good movies, and I'm including the
Lion King in that.

I do happen to think Titanic is a quality film, but we're
not talking quality. You said Cameron had no credibility. I
would say say the biggest grossing movie of all time buys
you a lot of credibility as a director.

i thought titanic was appalling. it could have been ok
without that farcical love story

Christ what's the big problem with Alien3? I thought it was
a good follow-on to Aliens. "killed all those great
characters from 2" wtf? Of course they did that was the
point. As for putting Arnie in the Alien series that just
plain heresy. :(

See I wouldn't say that either. It's not like Limp
Bizkit get props from musos. Having the biggest grossing
movie of all time buys you a lot of power as a director, not
necessarily credibility. Well, maybe millions of housewives
across the world have his poster on their walls, but not I.

I think it's safe to say we just disagree on this one :)

Heh, basically saying that selling a lot of copies - like
"tha Bizkit" did with their last two albums - doesn't
automatically command respect from people with
valued/informed opinions. Hence the rating on IMDB.
Interesting that in the average rating - 6.9 - that men
voted it 6.8 on average, and women 7.1. I thought there'd be
a much bigger gap than that. It also gets higher as the age
goes up, people over 45 LOVE this movie :D

Hell, I know you're not a total spud for liking it, the
Eraserhead avatar proves that you have some taste :P

I think it's a technical masterpiece more than anything. The
romance storyline doesn't bother me either way.

...and no, I'm not a total spud. I like a mixed bag of
stuff, as my top 100 movies list demonstrates :P

Titanic is just Romeo and Juliet on a sinking ship. This
un-original love story is how hollywood attempts to trick
audiences into caring about anyone on the ship. But it's
not the plot that makes Titanic impressive, everyone knows
the frickin' boat is gonna sink anyway. It's the grand
scale of the movie in general. The realistic special
effects and modeling; the hoards of actors and stand-ins in
many of the shots. it's a pretty amazing directorial
accomplishment that few directors have the ability (or cash)
to produce.

On that chart you're referring to, yes, but it's not a chart
of who I think is the most skilled actor, more a chart of
'cumulative value'.

Fucking right I would! She looks like a frog but that scene
is erotic as fuck. I'd want to have the alien watching as we
did it.

Danbrusca: That is a pretty tidy list, coupla classics
missing maybe, and should the Godfather 3 really be there?
;) Nice to see you got Ghostbusters, that's all that
matters.

Where's Groundhog Day, motherfucker!?!??

your movie list is intriguing.
i would agree with about 40% of it but i can't see how
movies like "deep impact" and "armageddon" or "Air Force
One" would even come close to my top 200 list.

I think The Godfather Part 3 is a great film, though not as
good as the first two.

The onyl real problem I have with it is Sophia Coppola's
complete lameness as an actress, but there's more than
enough good stuff to warrant it's inclusion in my top 100,
what with the politics and Greek-style tragedy.

I'm not snobbish about my top 100, if I find a movie really
entertaining I'll add it, whether or not it's an artistic or
technical masterpiece.

was it's eventual downfall.

..

I'm flabberghasted.

why not make a list based on your actual opinion, not just a
mathematical representation of how you rate them in
individual films?

it just seems strangely anal, I guess. :)

"people with
valued/informed opinions.....Hence the rating on IMDB
"
O K... and how does IMDB ryme with valued/informed
opinions?
some biased "top250 of all time" they got there. I still
remember how many of the sad gits there registered for a new
account to work LOTR:FOTR away from the nr.1 spot cos it
knocked their idolized godfather part1 off the nr1 spot.
*insert shocked faces and whiny noises from Godfather lovers
here* Gimme a break please.
That whole list is highly overrated and useless as a basis
for fair ratings, it's just a bunch of kids fighting for
their favorite flick. It's like asking a dead guy to give
you backup during a shootout, trying to justify your own
opinion by calling on IMBD.

Give me another place that compares to it. There are none,
it's the best place on the net to find out about movies. I'm
sure there are thousands of kids voting with total bias for
their favourite movies, overlooking all the flaws and
awarding them 10, but LOTR got 100,000 votes. Not all of
them are gonna be zealots, and you can break down the ages
and see for yourself how many kids voted. It's the law of
averages, it all balances out eventually. It's not like the
top 10 list is completely unbelievable, those are generally
the most popular movies of most people. I might not agree
with it, and you might not, but there is a thing called
"difference of opinion" - heard of it?

And I can't take you seriously because you rate Lethal
Weapon 4 over the first one. In fact, they all get
subsequently better? Pass me some of that shit you're
on.

"I might not agree

"

that's what I was aiming at with my post. IMBD's ratings are
born from "OMG I LOVE THAT MOVIE SO MUCH votes" so there's
no point in trying to find a valued source of filmratings,
there are none, it's always a matter of opinion, which is
proven by your latest post where you can't take me seriously
because you don't like lethal weapon 4 better than 1.
But you don't have to take me serious, because I know I am
right anyway.

...because it's too complicated to just do it on opinion.
Bringing in a rating element forces you to simplify the
issue.
