Downtempo!

I'm getting into downtempo these days, cause I need
something relaxing that isn't alcohol-based. There's some
great Caia and Thievery Corporatin at EMusic - what else
should I check out? Bear in mind I am almost completely
ignorant of the genre so please state the obvious if
necessary.

What is downtempo anyway? Does the name speak for itself?

According to allmusic.com, key artists include: Suns of
Arqa, Two Lone Swordsman and Waldeck, but I suppose you
checked there already?

Man this avatar is starting to annoy me.

It's kinda the bastard child of lounge, funk, worldbeat and
triphop, shaken not stirred and poured over crushed ice at
sunrise or sunset. Also I think there are blowjobs involved.

William Caslon Experience is the kind of thing I'm looking
for - lush and rhythmic, with nothing edgy or annoying. Just
listening to Valis and The Real Funicello. Did they sample
Philip K. Dick saying "Valis"? I don't know what he sounds
like.

well, for relaxing music you MUST listen to Fast Asleep by
Funki Porcini... it's seriously one of the most relaxing
albums I've ever heard I think... just saps all the tension
and stress away from me!

I think they are named after a gourmet mushroom, funghi
porcini. I saw it dried for sale in little cellophane
packages.

I will check out this "Bent" even though they sample someone
whose name I know not. David Essex?? :: does a google :: Hm,
looks like an old fart.

...uhhhh, good beats and smooth groove? I mean judging from
the name. Sounds like a groovy lounge with exotic drinks.

I like how that breaks down at the end. The title and the
"let me walk the moon in peace" title make me think of Billy
from Family Circus and how Bil Keane would draw his crazy
dotted line path home from... the astro-crater!

thanks fleetmouse! glad you enjoyed it. i actually got the
title from a book my friend had - a really old children's
book, from like the 50's, called Billy Meets A Spaceman. It
had a five year old kid meet and befriend a spaceman. weird
shit.

Family Circus was the bizzomb, yo! Used to read it all the
time back when i was into the funnies.

I'm not sure who they sampled, but I'm glad you like it. Get
'Delay Pigs' and 'More Close than Opran EP'. I've heard all
the albums on that site (in their entirety - not just
samples) and those two albums are the best. Support teh
hippies so they can keep making music!

Did you ever see Dysfunctional Family Circus? It was like a
game where they'd post a cartoon minus the caption and
everyone would try to come up with the sickest funniest
lines for it and the best ones would get posted.
Unfortunately it got shut down when Bil Keane wrote a letter
to the webmaster. :: googles :: Oh goody there's still an
archive.
