HELP an amateur techno artist (please read)

Juz from NY on 2001-10-29 00:02 [#00046454]

This doesn't directly relate to Aphex Twin, but I'm asking
this to a community of electronica-lovers, and hopefully
some fellow artists. I've been listening to techno my whole
life, and now I'm attempting to write my own. But the techno
culture isn't too welcoming of newbies - I'm pretty
confused.

I currently own a Korg N364 Workstation. The mixer seems
very confusing to figure out but I suppose I could try. I
don't really love Korg's, all their features seem confusing
to navigate through. It has some nice sounds, but for making
techno, all of its percussion is innapropriate - everything
is big, fat, and way too realistic. I don't want a drum kit
when making techno. I really like Roland - I plan on buying
a Roland JP-8080 modulator to hook up to my synth.

What I'm really asking is, what advice do you have for me?
What equipment should I be looking at? I want to make music
similar to my favorite artists: Aphex Twin, Orbital,
Squarepusher, Chicane, BlueTonicWorld, etc. I plan on
getting Cakewalk for my mixing/editing/recording - is this a
wise choice? Do I really need a sampler (if so, what's an
inexpensive option)?

Please give me advice...point me in the right direction.
Simply base your replies on this: I'm currently a Junior in
High School, with limited amounts of money and there is a
large possibility that making Electronica will merely be a
HOBBIE, rather than a CAREER. Thank you for reading.

you should be a dj...i hear thats popular too

i wouldn't worry about the equipment - it's all in how you
use it. try to subvert the equipment and what it was
originally intended for. overwork it. be creative. you
can make amazing stuff with just a pc and the right ideas as
well.

cakewalk will be fine i guess

what sort of computer dya have? personally i am a fan of
software/computer based stuff. Vst instruments now adays do
wonderful things: Reaktor and the like

APhex uses protools/recycle and a heap of other random
stuff. BUt it really depends on the person. I know lots of
people making really good music using shareware sequencers
and free audiosamples.. but if you want to make your own
sounds then .. JP i guess is pretty nice.

italics - i've got a pc. so far the only music software i
have on it is: hammerhead, hip hop ejay, d-lusion, and i
just got fruity loops 3 (but it'll take a lil while before i
figure it out). any software (user-friendly) you had in
mind?

Xanatos from NYC on 2001-10-29 03:33 [#00046505]

I'm getting into fruityloops 3, spend some time with it
before you move on to downloading more programs.

Where in NY are you from?

i make some interesting techno.. all my friends seem to like
it a lot. all i use is Sonic Foundry Acid 2.0, a wave
recorder, and a wave editor, and i make my own loops with a
mic and i chop up and mess with some of the loops they give
you... its pretty sweet. my most recent stuff includes all
loops made by myself if anybody cares. but yeah im more for
software cuz basically im poor. the program isn't even mine,
i borrowed it and installed it. im a cheap bastard

dude who started this post.

um .. fruityloops should be fine.

I know heaps of people that make good shit on it ..
fruityloops 3 also is vst compatible, which is brilliant if
youre into that sort of thing.

there aint really a short cut with making music. learnign
the hard way is the best way.

this guy i know, asked me couple a days ago whether he can
"watch" me make a tune! cause he couldn't be bothered
working out how the programs and shit work! - lazy cunt,
told him to sod off.

Moral of the story, don't give up on fruityloops, from what
i hear it is pretty user friendly, so ur probably only gonna
encounter more difficult user interface type thngs. ..?

anyone got the creamware ELectra?

Sounds quite yummy. How does it compare to Reaktor.

Not that i'm planning on splashing out in the near future,
but you never know.

Most Techno Sucks actually. Theres far to much much of it
to even consider it a category of music. Why do you think
there is things like heavy metal, and soft rock, and
alternative? most of that music sucks too. And Second, Why
do you want your music to sound like aphex? Wouldn't you
want it to sound like you? Any REAL musician would, not
that you aren't, but you can't use loop from some program,
and you can't set out trying to sound like somebody else.

Juz from NY on 2001-10-31 01:17 [#00047285]

Dublosyx - You must be confused by the topic at hand. For
starters, you say that techno shouldn't be a category
because there is "too much of it". Your examples would be
rock divided into Heavy Metal, Soft Rock, and Alternative.
Electronica has more sub-categories than any other genre I
know of - Trip Hop, Ambient, trance, house, breakbeat,
jungle, goa, downtempo, experimental, drum and bass, IDM...
Why are you on this message board if you dislike techno? Why
are you discouraging me from making music I love?

In reference to your "why would you like your music to sound
like aphex twin?": Why not? I love his music. I won't be
mimicing him or sampling his music, I simply said I plan on
making music SIMILAR to my favorite artists. That's a crime?
Do you even make music? If so, you're still a hypocrite -
the first person to play music in the history of mankind is
the only one that can say he's had no influences.

I don't really know what you were trying to accomplish with
your post. Maybe you were just trying to start an argument.
If you have something constructive to add to the thread,
please be my guest.

I have a Roland XP-30 synthesizer and Cakewalk home studio,
but is there any way to export a song to .wav from Cakewalk?
All I see are options to save as MIDI.

Smyrma from St Louis on 2001-10-31 04:05 [#00047323]

I'm in somewhat the same predicament, except I have nothing.
I want to get some PC software where I can sample and
create electronic music. Nothing too fancy (read: I'm poor)
but enough to make somewhat complicated stuff.

Help me because I'm dumb. Thanks.

Yo Juz dont be discouraged by some of the lamewahts on this
board...be proud that youve taken the first step and
actually gone out gotten some hardware and tried your hand
at makin some tunez......anyhow if your lookin for some
advice theres no real easy way around anything, your gonna
have to learn things (programs + hardware) simply by playing
with them...but be glad that your starting young and if you
keep at it (sit down and mess around for at least 1 hour a
day) and bythe time your my age you could have your own
album out......as far as tips and tricks....go to your local
book store or library and get a book on music theory and
song structure, trust me it'll help alot. there is also a
couple of pretty good mags out there that you might wanna
check out like Future Music and Electronic Musician...there
are a few helpfull tid-bits in those.....I personaly have
been producing Electronica/Industrial music for over 5 years
now (started in highshcool) with no musical background
whatsoever and am on the verge of getting a record
deal....just goes to show ya persistance pays off
;).......the gear i use btw is a Roland sp-808EX sampling
workstation (not very good for live unless your a dj tho) a
Roland Mc-303 (good starters box ,easy to use, but yamaha's
RM1X is better) and the new Roland SP-505 whenever it
finally gets here :/......most of my music is actually made
in Fruityloops 3 (which is a freaking wicked prog once you
learn how to use it )...other than that thats pretty much
it.
Good luck and keep at it ;)
