If you don't know what it is, it's like where you become
clean and straight and don't do any drugs, drink, smoke, or
have casual/promiscuous sex.

Who coined this awful term anyway?

I'm it though, I'm straightedge. Good lord, reducing my
lifes choices to one word..........in which case it could be
two words with some proper punctuation

straightedge means something very different where I live
when I was a kid (yes, I was a lil punk rocker)
straightedgers used to beat up my friends with brass knucks
and chains and such. because my friends would swear or smoke
cigarettes or something equally damnable
see, 'cause around here a lot of religious fundamentalists
use 'straightedge' as a lifestyle to justify senseless
violence that is the result of emotional isolation and
repressed feelings, etc
they also beat up my gay friends sometimes
when I lived in the south, on the other hand, I had many a
good straightedge friend.
god, I just wrote practically a chapter. sorry for such a
long un

Alrighty, thanks for the responses. I think it's a bit more
than just becoming clean though. You have to "claim edge" or
some shit and make a commitment for life. Some
straightedgers go vegetarians aswell and cut out all drugs
like even aspirin and caffeine etc and have NO sex at all.
There's a good article here if you're interested, and it
shares the same views as me, and probably any outsider to
it:

linky linky

Anyway, i don't think i want to "claim edge" or whatever,
but i've been pretty clean for a while now, except for the
stupid sex part. I don't see what's wrong with sex aslong as
you use protection or whatever. It's natural and healthy,
unlike most drugs and smoking etc. Haven't smoked, smoked
weed or done any drugs for a while, or been drunk in ages,
so i dunno.. it seems like a positive choice, and i think
uplifting and confidence boosting if you can hold it
together. Uni's (college for you yanks :) gonna be hard next
year. :/

Minor Threat are cool. I'm not straight edge, I don't think
many true straight edgers exist any more, or if they ever
did, i've never met one.

Isn't straight edge somthing to do with being an emo kid and
u have to hae a big black 'x' on ur hand to show others
thats what u r ??? or maybe im wrong...

offline diablo on 2003-07-03 02:16 [#00765775]
Points: 3242 Status: Lurker

The x on the hand is because in the US if u are too young to
drink, on the door they put an x on your hand so they won't
serve you. This became a symbol for straight edge. All quite
gay really. sorry did i say that? I meant an understandable
backlash against the annoying drunken punk cliche, that
brought a new energy to the DC punk scene.

as stated, straightedge is more extreme than just "not doing
drugs" ... it's proudly exclaiming that you don't "poison
yourself" and berating or even violently assaulting those
who do. It's the only cult I've ever heard of based on NOT
doing things. It's fucking ridiculous.

If you don't do drugs/sex/alcohol you are not straightedge,
you are just a person who doesn't do drugs/sex/alcohol. Now,
if you shove this down my throat, you are straightedge, and
a detriment to society and my freedom of choice.

wrong diablo.. in new york or in new jersey these fucking
nerdy wannabe punk kids will do the straightedge "X" and put
an "N" up top, a "Y" or a "J" (depending on which state
you're from) and "S" and "E" in the left and right sections,
respectively. what's so goddamn punk about that? it's so
BOoorrriiiing.. loosen up kids.. fuck your bodies up a
little bit

They may do that, but Diablo is right, the straightedge X
thing did spawn from the X on the hand symbolizing that the
person is too young to drink.

The straight edgers that beat people up are known as
hardliners. Reeeally stupid.

i think striaghtedge is stupid. not that it's stupid to be
straightedge, but the straightedge scene in general. from a
propaghandi song "fuck off, who cares, about your stupid
zines, your shitty scenes". something something.

i don't think you should be particularly proud of either
choice. it's not a big deal. most people are just
straightedge (x's on hands, etc) so that they can say they
are.

that link is bullshit, straight-edge has nothing to do with
shoving it down peoples throats, ian mackaye coined the
fucking term and he himself said that he is straight edge
but that he never tells people to stop smoking or stop
drinking, where the idea that to be straight edge you have
to enforce it on others is a mystery to me. the straight
edge stuff is discussed a little more in a song by
embrace(also fronted by mackaye) called "no more pain", he
says, "no more alcohol, its a koolaid substitute, no more
heroin, death is not glamorous...no more suicide, it kills
everyone, no more petty love, no more petty hate, no more
pettiness, no more pain"

personally, i guess im straight edge but i certainly dont
force it upon others(which is not a part of the meaning
anyways)

article? The guy talks about hardliners are the ones who try
to enforce it on others.
