the Dutch (and maybe Belgian) people here might find
documentary on tv interesting...

I've seen it a few years ago and it features some interviews
with dj Spooky, Squarepusher(in his little studio),
Merzbow(with performance) and Karlheinz Stockhousen and
other interesting musicmakers

Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Henry, Holger Czukay, Michel

"

hehe, wel een goede vergelijking.

"Jij hebt misschien wel een leven :P"

wie ik? Haha... was dat maar waar ;-)

Yeah he saying something like; don't enjoy music, just
listen to it to learn your life's lessons out of it :S
uhmm, no thanks sorry.
I digged Spooky's view on music tho.
He came across as quite the sensible chap to me.

pfff... too much talking about music, and not enough
listening to it! I really disliked the show. It seems like
those television-makers did listen to the german guy:
"don't enjoy music, just listen to it to learn your
life's lessons out of it
"

That's exactly what they did. I doubt this program really
inspired anyone to check out any of this music. It was all
so theoretical. They didn't talk at all about the beauty of
the music.

"pfff... too much talking about music, and not enough
listening to it!"

....but isn't that what cds and mp3s are for?

"It seems like those television-makers did listen to the
german guy: "don't enjoy music, just listen to it to learn
your
life's lessons out of it""

I can't remember him(stockhausen) saying that you must not
enjoy the music, John Cage even said the complete opposite.
I do agree that Stockhausen sometimes has a little trouble
expressing what he really means(remember his comments about
the WTC disaster?), possibly because he's old. I think the
film didn't just show a singular opinion on music but let
everyone explain their approach:

- Stockhausen: generate tones from the ground up, create new
rules in music to stimulate thought
- Pierre Henry: take sounds from your environment, music is
just a game
- Squarepusher: his music is made instinctively
- John Cage: Music should always be about enjoyment, he
didn't like tradition
- Merzbow: he likes overstimulating the senses, music is
about pain too
- Spooky: tradition plays an important role, things should
compliment eachother and not replace eachother

"saying that you must not enjoy the music,"

I don't think he did. But he only talked about the technical
aspects, never about the fun he had with it or the beauty of
the music.

And i don't know anything about stockhausen, so maybe he is
also very passionate about music. Maybe he did talk
about it, but they cut all that out to make the program
focussed on the technical side.
Either way i didn't really enjoy it.

"....but isn't that what cds and mp3s are for?"

Sure... but still. It wouldn't have hurt to also have a
little more music on the show. Just because cd's are
specifically meant for that, doesn't mean other media can't
play music aswell.

Yeah, so like, that french dude and the german guy, they
were absolute nerds. I hated their music and especially
their point of view on music. I mean wtf man! "It's not good
to fall asleep while listening to music, or dance to it" or
whatever he said. "You should all sit down and listen to it,
just listen."
Bullshit! It's very important to dance to music. Yeah sure,
you can have nice times just listening to it, but dancing to
it and stuff is important too. And that german guy's
'piece', yunno with all the noise and that japanese woman,
that sucked big time!
I did agree with dj spooky's point of view. My god, that
guy's intelligent and he's sooo right.
Tom was a bit vague imo, especially that stuff he said about
buying one and leaving the other 99. I'm not sure if he even
understood himself there.

Speaking of Stockhausen : Clic.

Also, you should keep in mind that Karlheinz Stockhausen and
Pierre Henry are classical, academic composer, whereas the
others make "pop music". That could explain their different
points of view...

I did like how "TJ" got totally absorbed in what he was
doing... I mean man did you see his face?
I don't think there's going to be alot more truly
groundbreaking, original new music though, everything's all
derivative nowadays.
