What is it with this album? I already had Rest Proof Clockwork, Double Figure and P-Brane-ep... and i love all of those to death. I picked up the not for threes album thinking it would be another classic to add to my collection.
But i am not liking it at all :-( I listened to it about 5 times, but i'm still very very dissapointed. Is this really plaid?! Some of the tracks are okay i guess (#9 stood out, as i remember it)... but most of it is incredibly boring. Especially the first track is almost impossible to get through. And the track with Björk (i was looking forward to that!) is also a dissapointment.
And it's weird that i've never seen anyone else here expres this same sentiment. There are people who hate plaid, and there are people who love plaid. But i've never heard anyone say the love plaid except the first album. It seems all the fans rate all the albums about equally high.
I'll go listen to it again, see if it grows on me. I really want to like it, because all their other cd's are so neat!

There's a few tracks I like... Kortisin the most of all. But generally, yeah, it's a pretty boring and generic album. Double Figure gives it a mega wedgie.

god... to make things worse the first track also lasts almost 8 minutes :-p I nearly fell asleep, thank god it's over now ;-)
"*have you grabbed the peel session, its a lovely addition to the Plaid catalogue"
Never seen it anywhere! I've seen the peelsession-cd's by Autechre & BoC, but never plaid. What, they play new songs on there? I'm not really that interested in slightly tweaked versions of existing songs.
I must say, this Kortisin indeed doesn't sound all that bad. It's quite lovely... but yet it still lacks something. A certain edge... i don't know... the guitar sounds very nice and all that. But they could have done more with this track!

yes, i've been meaning to get that one. And also The Black Dog i'd like to hear some of their music.
Even though Not For Threes has made me believe early music by plaid = not so good.
Or is it just this album where they messed up?

Myopia reminds me of some of the jungle-music in Mario Kart. Right down to the jungle/monkey noises in the background!
It was perfect for that game, but it's not the sort of thing i want to hear on a serious music-album.

well it's over now. I must say it sounded a little better over headphones.
Tracks 9 & 10 are absolutely fantastic... my favourite part of the album. The last track is pretty good too. As is Kortisin.
Extork is extremely catchy... i just know i'll be humming "I was wrong, wrong, wrong" all night long now :-p But i'm not really sure if i like the song all that much.
But i really will give it a fair chance :-) Ofcourse, it's plaid... they've earned that. I'm glad i didn't start with this album though... it probably would have stopped me from listening to their other music.

'not for threes' isn't all too shabby. sure, it's no 'restproof clockwork', but i definitely wouldn't call it a tossaway.
the double 'trainer' CD, a compilation of their early work is a bit hard to swollow in places though - too old-school and primitive for me.

You kidding me? Not For Threes is amazing. Abla Eedio(the first track) is awesome...as are Headspin (extremely funny sample ending the track) and Kortisin.
Lilith is cool and sensuous, extork is filled with brilliant abused noisy breaks, seph glistens like morning dew and rakimou has the most heartrending of their songs.
All in all, this album is a left-of-center pop masterpiece.

I was listening to double figure this morning, and it sounded soooo good. It has to be one of my all time favourite albums. I just wish i could enjoy not for threes in the same way.
I'll listen to it again, but i doubt i'll ever really be able to enjoy it as much as their other cd's.

Not for threes is a great one. On headphones, you can hear the detail and complexity of their percussion, and they display a wide range of mood with a broad sound palette similar to Rest Proof.
As much as I LOVE Double Figure, the album is so tight, it sometimes sounds like you're listening to one LONG song in different parts.
Double Figure is serious, whilst NFT is more playful (take the steel drums for instance).

The way I see it - each one of Plaid's releases is centered on a theme and musical palette.
NFT is playful, colourful, and diverse - with probably the most complex percussion of any of their releases IMO.

Apparently, the new stuff by Ken Downie is a bit stinky - like that one with the porkchop on the front.

he is more into ambient stuff...and The Black Dog earlier were quite about the exotica of arabic rhythms and eastern melodies, and a deep deep love for detroit style techno. That was all apart of the The Black Dog experience much like one of their tracks called "Ambience With Teeth"...and now after Plaid split, he seems more just ambience...and no teeth.

Man, for me it´s the other way around. I love NFT but find DF sort of bland and boring esp. the second half (after New Family which is a fucking stellar track).
I don´t know which one I like better, NFT or RPCW, both are amazing. But with RPCW like with DF I think it fades a bit in the end (this time after Dang Spot) and that "hidden" track is pretty awful.
NFT is pretty solid throughout and I think it´s the most colourful and diverse of their albums (different moods, tempos and time sigs etc).
fav tracks: Myopia: if you don´t get this you haven´t got a clue. Prague Radio Rakimou the techno-ish track Ol (?) Lilith Most of them are great tho except for the track with Nicolette on it (crap) and maybe a few more that are just decent (Ladyburst)

Do you think the album title "Not for Threes" might refer to the loss of Ken Downie?
As in "we were once a trio, but due to creative differences, Andy and I decided to become plaid and do things our own way. Our creative vision is not for three people."
Is this new, or is it just obvious, and I'm a dumbass for not figuring it out sooner?
