recommend releases to check from each of the following:
Múm
Manitoba
The Notwist (not their eponymous release, please)
The Decemberists (their new one?)
Merzbow (is this all ktpa noise shit?)
and which Four Tet album is better .. btw 'Pause' and 'Rounds' .. I'm thinking about going w/ 'Pause'

mum - 'finally we are no one' is a masterpiece!
manitoba - 'up in flames' (unless you want an imitation of BOC, in which case you might want to go for the 1st album)
the notwist - neon golden (the most recent, and by far their best. the one prior is also a good bet)
don't know the other two well enough to recommend anything.
but if you're also looking for something more in the vain of notwist, i highly recommend the album 'cold house' by hood - in many ways, even better than notwist.
both 'pause' and 'rounds' are good. tough choice.

notwist is very 2000 - radiohead right? in their fusion of "idm" (which, from here on out shoudl be referred to as inventive dance music.. though the 'dance music' part is still extremely questionable) w/ rock.. they're 'prog-rock' like radiohead is
what is mum like?
thanks for your input by the way

mum is like downtempo ambient nonsense which is actually rather good at times.

from mum get the "yesterday was dramatic, todsay is ok"lp, far FAR FAR better than finally we are no one.
if you happen to like their stuff then get telefon tel aviv`s "fahrenheit fair enough", and if you happen to like that, then get ROTOR+ "aileron"lp (from new zealand)

there are indeed similarities between the notwist and 'kid a'-era radiohead, though i would argue that some notwist tracks are far more poppier; they are by no means a radiohead-wannabe ripoff band however. they have a very distinct style.
as for mum, well, given that they're icelandic, their music can be described as a fusion between sigur ros-style drawn-out melancholy tunage and subtle, organic-sounding minimal/glitch undertones - quite gorgeous really!

difference between 'yesterday was dramatic ...' and 'finally we are no one' is that one is devoid of vocals pretty well entirely, whereas 'finally ...' has beautiful ethereal vocals courtesy of the incredibly babelicious mum twins (as featured on the cover of belle & sebastian's 'fold your hands child, you walk like a peasant'). in my humble opinion, 'finally ... ' is far better produced, more lush, organic and overall a good album as a whole, whereas 'yesterday ...' strikes me as a little too cliche-idm in places.

mum - 'finally we are no one', id say.. though 'yesterday was dramatic..' is quite good too, as is the 'please smile my noise bleed' ep and the 'remixed' album, the latter two are mostly remixes (2 and a half original tracks on 'please smile') get them all eventually, but start with 'finally..'
manitoba: it depends on your taste.. if you like mellow electronic music with bits of post rock and jazz thrown in, get 'start breaking my heart'.. comparisons to boc arent entirely unfounded..
or, if you prefer upbeat, rhythmic psychedelic rock with subtle electronic bits, get 'up in flames' ..if you like both, then get both.
dunno about the notwists, decemberists or merzbow.. im not sure how one merzbow release could be better than another.. considering he doesnt seem to variate much from brutal noise.. but i may be wrong
as for four tet.. pause has some brilliant moments..but i'd say rounds is more consistent..
on pause, he tends to punctuate the brilliance with some fluffy filler, where rounds stays pretty strong throughout.
