So I went to hawk my GameCub today, as I rarely play it
anymore.

GameCube, 2 wireless controlers, 2 games and 2 memory cards,
all mint condition.

Some pawn shop wanted to give me $50, FIFTY DOLLARS!!! I
was looking for at least $100, and I could sell it online
seperatly for about $160

Anyway, he was like, do you want to consign it. And I had
no idea what that meant. You can sell it, then buy it back
or something

wtf is up with pawn shops, wtf IS a pawn shop, what is
consignment, and why are they so weird.

help?

I don't know WHAT that cat was trying to pull

consignment is a bit of a strange pain in the ass thing i
think. i have really only seen it with clothes...basically,
you clean your stuff up, give it to the store to sell for
you, and the longer it sits on the shelf, the smaller the
percentage of the sale you get to keep.

oh, so they sell it for you?

But you can buy it back too?

then what's a pawn shop? Someone said that was only stolen
stuff??

Pawn shops won't give you jack shit for anything. eBay is
really the best option.

ok, there is a shop that will pay me for stuff.

there is a pawn shop

there is a consignment shop

---------------
sometimes they are all in one, so what is the point of
consignment, and what is the difference between a pawn shop
and a store that gives you cash for stuff?

Pawn shops have shady connotations as they are often used as
an easy way of offloading stolen goods. Sometimes boxed
"new" goods tha t hey have several of the same item are
actually from a warehouse raid. Many pawnshop owners have a
seperate place (often an off site "lock up" or garage) to
store "hot goods" for 2-3 months before they put them out on
display.

However, not all stuff in them is neccesarily nicked. I have
some poor friends who've had to pawn stuff till the end of
the month to cover bills etc. that said, a mate who worked
in a pawn shop as a student estimated 2/3s of the valuable
(say, over £100) items in them were nicked. These are the
things people could get more money for by selling on
ebay/2nd hand papers etc. smaller things like
toasters/kettles etc. are generally legit.

There is a chain of them in the UK called "Cash Generator"
which has succeded in being seen as reputable by having
neatly organised shelves, uniform for staff, returns
policy/guarantee etc.

there called 'cash converters' up north, but we call em
'hash converters' for obvious reasons, my mate's brother got
a mint condition SH-101 from one for £50

He he, yeah, they used to all be cash convertors... the
southern ones had a name change about 5 years ago. My mates
used to have great fun playing a cash convertor and pawn
shop (owned by the cash convertor manager's brother!) off
against each other selling pcs between the two. 2 mates made
enough to buy decent PCS themselves.

Lucky fucker with the sh-101 :)

Blatant: Sorry dunno what consignment is. May be the name
for when they give you a low interest loan to the end of the
month with an item as a guarantee.

well, thanks for your help, you could be right.

I'm pretty curious, but this whole situation and definition
thing is just a big mess now :D
