I have a huge problem.....
I have two computers at home. One is a laptop (Win XP), one a desktop PC (Win 98).
There are a load of files on the desktop PC that I REALLY, REALLY need to get onto my laptop this weekend......
The way I see it, I have two options: One is to burn all the files onto CDs and then transfer them via CD drive. The other is to transfer the files by networking the PCs. But I am unable to to figure out how to do either of these tasks!
For some reason, I can't seem to write CDs anymore! I've never had the problem before. Every time I try to burn a CD in Nero I have something called a "buffer underrun", and the Burn process fails. Any ideas how I can overcome this?
And I can't seem to network my PCs. My laptop has a network cable port, and my desktop has a network card. I used to be able to plug a cable between these two ports and the computers automatically recognised the network and I was able to transfer files with no problem. However, I recently had a huge virus problem and had to reinstall Win XP on the laptop. I have no idea how to set it up to recognise the network.
Please, please, please help me. I really need to sort this out over the weekend.
:(

Cheers lads.
Unfortunately I don't have the Win XP disc. Didn't get it with my PC when I bought it, and when I reinstalled it recently I had it done in some dodgy shop out here in Lithuania (where I'm currently living) - probably illegally.
Oh, man!

Forgot to say - no, don't know anyone out here with a Zip drive. Also, it's about 10 GB of data, so I think it would take forever with Zip discs. Still, it would be better than nothing.

I doubt it JAroen. Nobody I know out here is much into computers. Come to think of it, neither am I really. I wouldn't know how to use one!

Get someone from the UK to mail you win XP on CDR. It should be just a matter of correctly setting up the networking bits, and you can do that on XP quite easily. Try running windows update on the laptop, maybe it'll fix the missing bits?

thanx man
unfortunately windows update won't work because the dodgy computer shop has installed an unauthorised copy of winxp!
i think i *might* have overcome the problem though by writing cds at a lower speed - seems to have stopped the buffer underrun problems from occurring! i think it has, anyway

Yes that will stop the bufer underrun, you also have to make sure you aren't doing anything else while burning as it can cause buffer under run too.
If you shut down all unnecessary programs and just leave the CD burning you should be OK.

I don't know...I know a friend who does though...I suppose if you search around you will find it, all the crack does is remove the reg check from the service pack which is how they were stopping people installing it.
