shitty. If you're into collecting afx releases for the sake
of collecting them, then get this release. If you are
expecting something new and innovative then steer clear. The
remix is just drill 'n bass with annoying vocals. It doesn't
even compare to the drill 'n bass on drukqs which are 10
times better. The last 2 noise tracks are shit. If you like
good noise then stick with Merzbow.

great, just different tunes for different times

i used to be turned off by the the first men01 because its
kinda cheesy, now ive been listening to all 3 songs most of
the day

A lot of things reveiwed as good on this board are things
that turn out to be terrible, so keep those bad smoj reveiws
comin', i cant wait to hear it!

MEN1 was a fantastic dancefloor smasher. MEN2 doesn't even
compare :(

i agree that men1 is better than men2, but i still think
men2 is worth it for the gabbercore ragga stylings of track
one, lets face it, it's a marmite release

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2003-06-19 11:00 [#00747864]

well, i actually dont dislike that bug remix, but its not
that great either (better than lots of other music tho!)

those 2 noise tracks are just like that bonus high frequency
sound (not much better) which i never listen :)

but yeah could be someone actaully likes this release...

marmite is stuff you spread on bread to eat, some people
think it's disgusting, some people love it, must be a uk
product, but you get the idea

well, i finally heard it and "eh" is my official review. the
remix is just "ok" nothing smashing. i kinda like the
original better. kinda. the "noise" tracks are dumb. not
exciting. wankery. throw away. not good by any standard.

i reckon there is much more to the remix than on a few
listens - it's pretty imaginativley crafted - you miss it on
the first few listns

yeah, im starting to feel it a bit more now. i like the part
around 3:03 where the beat drops and then comes back in, the
bass really takes over.

offline evolume from seattle (United States) on 2003-06-19 17:15 [#00748416]

i've finally listened to this ep

it deffinately has the sound of an ep; music that just
doesn't really belong on an album.
i like the drill n bass track, its pretty crazy and the
vocal effects are cool but my jaw didn't drop or anything.
However, i don't think RDJ's intention was to break much new
ground with this anyway. again, it's just an e.p.

one thing i don't get is all the comparisons to merzbow.
just because these afx tracks are noise doesn't mean they
are anything like merzbow (at least not what i have heard of
merzbow) All the merzbow i have heard is clearly analog
while this is obviously very digital. the noises are
crisper, sharper and the effects are more precise.

i'm not saying i like these tracks much. its hard for me to
form an opinion as i've never really been a fan of straight
noise but, i don't think they sound anything like merzbow.
infact i really do hear the humor of aphex twin in them.
i.e. it sounds like something he would do.
again, not cheering for them just sayin...

I saw in the release .nfo file that came with it that it was
release by WARP - is this perhaps his infamous "last record"
for them? maybe he's just going out with a...well not a
bang, thats for sure - more like a digital fart.

No it was released on MEN, a sub label of Rephlex...

I wish people would stop moaning about it, it's not that
bad. If you don't like something you don't need to bitch on
about it day after day, especially over a cheap EP.

i'm happy that AFX fans can say, with confidence that
'smojphace' is shit. i haven't listened to it yet and thanks
for everyone's honesty, i'm NOT going to buy it.

i will download it though. that's how much i'm disrespectin'

I'm glad you got your old dog avatar back. Maybe you didn't

(off topic: bought classics a while ago. i know it's one of

appreciate this album??)

No!

Classics is the album stereos were made to play.

And tell me...what is a similar album to Classics that is
not of Aphex Twin?

Well?

No, that's right - you can't tell me.

There isn't one.

i agree,
as an afx historical record, classics is, well, bitchen.
but i also agree that it is a bit repetative. i think the
smojphace bug remix thing is at least as good as some stuff
on classics. but shit, there are some fucking great tracks
on classics. like polynomial C, good gawd 'yall!
