I like the absence of words in most of it. The sounds are
unique, yes. But in that case, perhaps Pink Floyd did some
early IDM.

Damnit, there's earwax in the kitty litter again.

all, again)
i need beats wits some imagination not just some repetitive
crap + this genre doesnt have any limits which is great +
the melodies...ohh

IDM, well first its not really intelligent, second its
definately not dance-to-able, and third, a lot of it can
barely be classed as music

i agree with your first two comments....but not the last.
even songs w/o melody would be considered music =b

anyhoo it's a silly term, electronica for me *away with your
IDM*

could you define dance?

actually, i was on a gig last friday...there were people
like hawtin, bell, dj krush, bjork and lots of others
playing - i was trying to get into rhythm, but it didnt work
- its just not intense enough for my likings and i as trying
(i guess if you take a pill that works better)
anyhow, i was trying to get into right mood for the aphex
(who came on last) but it was all that boring rhythm...so
aphex came on and started to play some really hard techno -
it bored the hell out of me and i guess i was one of the few
people that were actually standing still...then he started
playing some gabber and jungle (not sure if this is idm, but
the rhythm stoped being boring) - that made me move
imediately...

IDM is the child of old experimental, ambient, tek/hip-hop,
industrial with various other elements thrown in here and
there such as jazz fusion, classical etc. Futurism for a
post-modern world!

It seems any more that genres are less and less defined by
the technical style of the music and more and more by the
common ideas, philosophies, interest groups etc. of the
artist. Correct me if you disagree but often times I find
more in common between bands like Sonic Youth and Autechre
than I do Autechre and Paul Oakenfold or Sonic Youth and The
Goo Goo Dolls, even though the latter comparisons may be
closer in their technical relationship the former definetly
come from a more common sub-culture or school of thought.

The problem with the term electronica is that it is pretty
broad and general and covers a lot of stuff I'm not all that
into. It is kind of like saying 'pop' or 'rock'. The term
IDM, even if it does make a pretense for itself, is at least
more specific.

idm has no cure: idm is rampant in some parts of the
developping world and it can tear lives apart...oops wrong
initials

REFER TO IT AS ELECTRONIC MUSIC!!!

i like it because it develops and alter in many dimensions:
for example guitar music will always broadly sound like
guitar music even if the key and tempo of songs is different
but electronic music has more scope in a timbral sense and
seems to mutate into drastic sub-styles veryquickly. it is a
fertile and stimulation musical style
