a "noise masterpiece"

you probably wouldn't get it... but if you are interested
in noise, go check out Kevin Drumm's new album on Hanson,
"Land of Lurches"... the cover art is pretty cool, and the
sounds... are insane... he builds these huge waves of
distorted feedback that teeter between walls of impenetrable
noise and glorious major chord layers...
fan-fucking-tastic...
the b-side has some interesting melodies and samples
embedded beneath a layer of noise... all very nice... my
favourite noise release to date...

Noise can be interesting, but never a masterpeice.

why not?

you can have masterpieces in every genre.

man don't be silly... masterpieces come from every
direction... and in any case, i only did it as a response to
a fellow in the latest smojphace thread who said :'Noise
tracks sound too "randomised" for my liking. I
wouldn't hear the difference between a track that is done
somewhere between dinner and dessert and a "noise
masterpiece" (of which I doubt they exist)'
stealing other people's post and twisting them is the newest
trend...

Masterpeice is an overused word...Classic is an overused
word and Genius is an overused word.

And I still say you can't have a noise maasterpeice. :P

yes the word is overused, and i'm being completely flippant
when i say it, this release wouldn't even be my favourite of
the year... but all the same that doesn't mean that the
potential for a noise masterpiece is not just as great as
the potential for a drillnbass masterpiece or microhouse
masterpiece (etc.)
:P

to bring up an old one, i recently saw wolf eyes at a show
in nyc, up before lightning bolt.
not feeling particularly jumpy, i decided to sit down
against the wall, close the lids and listen, which i think
must be the best way to listen to these guys.
at first i was thinking it was just another thoughtless
drone group to fill in silence on the bill. but there is a
real subtle energy to the eyes-- a fairly dark on at that.
one track had this cartooned sound that may have been swords
clashing.
obviously, i couldn't tell you too much more about them,
like how they sound in the studio. but i enjoyed the set.
the whole thing made me think of walking in the woods at
night (and that was before i knew the bands name). it made
me horny.
lighning bolt was a whole nother story...anyone seen them?

Most equate IDM with noise where I come from... So
intellectually malnourished !

Noise still can't be a masterpeice. And what the eff is
microhouse music?

I can't see the appeal in ''noise music'' either, but then,
I'm sure my family doesn't see the appeal in Confield.
Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

But I can imagine some cacaphonous noise being so much
better than some other cacaphonous noise that it could be
considered a masterpiece of cacaphony.

Cheers...so it is more genre defining wank for music that
couldn't make itself known any othr way. :P

'you probably wouldn't get it'

why?

i'd like to dredge up this post again... because goddamn
everytime i listen to Land of Lurches it gets better and
better... and i hope that someone will consider giving it a
listen... i have no idea why i said 'you probably wouldn't
get it'... perhaps there's some contextual angst towards a
post which inspired me to start this topic in the first
place (and i do remember this being kind of a knee-jerk
response to something or other)... but it isn't true...

the first track is like keith fullerton whitman stuff only
much more jaggedly textured... gorgeous as fuck

the second track build to this really creepy surface whistle
with these peculiar wolf-eyes/black dice sounding scream
vocals underneath... probably my favourite track on the
album...

and the last track is sheer violence...

if you are interested in any sort of experimental ambient,
i'd strongly recommend giving this a chance... but maybe
avoid headphones... cause you'll likely feel like you are
destroying your ears...

i like noise when it's done so that it evokes some sort of
feeling other than, "ow my ears". i really dont like the
smojphace noise...its too unlayered and boring; only one
thing to focus on.

yes... kevin drumm's sound is much more complex, and
beautiful and listenable, than smojphace...
