don't you think that quite a lot of "classic" albums everyone seems to love are overrated?
Radiohead - OK Computer Nirvana - Nevermind Pink Floyd - The Wall Autechre - LP5 Frank Zappa - We're Only In It For The Money etc...
all very good albums but excessively considered as masterpieces in my opinion... maybe at the time they were released, they were revolutionary or much better than the actual production?

i think reprazents new forms is very over-rated: the singles were good but the album is shit, attempting to be complex and jazzy but ultimately fruitless.
also the beatles are over-rated. how many 3 chord songs with nursery-rhyme lyrics have they made? they are the worlds' biggest bandwagon that people feel they have to be on.
i think mu-ziqs rephlex albums are overated, too formulaic- all the songs are the same. wouldn't mind but its a poor formula to begin with...

Yea, of all of those listed I think The Wall really IS a masterpiece. David Gilmour's solos are some of the best in rock history, not just wanking but extending and emotionally explicating the lyrics. Fuck I have a sudden urge to listen to some Pink Floyd -

eXXailon > about ep7. if you're not in the exact right mood it's boring crap, but if you are it is very good - though i agree, i wouldn't call it a masterpiece either.
i don't know, about The Wall - maybe it will grow on me, but for now i have mixed feelings about it. sometimes the music doesn't seem to fit the lyrics at all (Run Like Hell, In The Flesh, Waiting For The Worms...), and some just seem to be musically filler to make the story go well (Bring The Boys Back Home, Vera...) - it still has its gems (Another Brick In The Wall - all parts, Young Lust, Confortably Numb, Hey You, Goodbye Cruel World (so simple and yet so emotional it almost makes me cry)...), but a lot of it just sounds average to me. too much for it to be a masterpiece of a concept album to me, especially after having listened to The Downward Spiral for example (i know TDS has been inspired by The Wall so it's not fair to compare!) =/ )

The Wall is definitely overrated, full of filler. And Waters' bullshit can just get so insufferable.
I wonder what The Wall would sound like with Syd Barrett at the helm... imagine him on stage singing the sad songs from that album...

ain't no filler on The Wall at all in my opinion... that used to be my favorite album of all time, and I do think each song is pretty fantastic... I love it, this it works amazingly well as a whole, and as separate songs...
and Ok Computer, come on, it's amazing... definitely one of the top albums of the 90's...
I do think Nevermind is overrated... just a personal thing... and LP5, well that's one of my least favorite Autechre albums...

regarding classics, you left off the best song on that album, and one of aphex twins best songs ever: polynomial c.
ok computer is a tried and true masterpiece. as far as the wall is concerned, i don't care for that album or any pink floyd post wish you were here. pink floyd really wasn't good without syd barret.
the beatles have an entire line of albums that i think are classics but i can only enjoy on an academic level of admiration, but not as actual music that does anything for me emotionally.

frank zappa has a "classic album"? since when. haha. anyways, nirvana nevermind is not that good, i mean it was ok quite a while ago but nirvana is not my cup of tea. I like the wall a lot but I can understand what you mean.
"the beatles have an entire line of albums that i think are
classics but i can only enjoy on an academic level of admiration, but not as actual music that does anything for me emotionally. "
I agree 100%, i dont enjoy very many beatles tracks.
concerning afx - classics: I used to HATE this when i first got but I love it now, you have to listen to it in a different context then his later work, I like every track on classics come to think of it, definately listen to it again sometime.

i dislike that fucking song from the wall... you know with the children's choir... blah!
OK Computer: classic for a reason Lp5: who says Lp5 is classic? (well it is pretty damngood) Nevermind: undeniable but In Utero is better...
but here's my diss to a "classic": fucking Ulrich Schnauss... everyone is in love with his first album.... but i think it sounds like it was made on a fisher-price keyboard... it sounds bloody campy... and it's not that i don't get the CCO thing, i love pretty much everything else on CCO... but Schnauss i give one big: "Meh" to...

wow, i totally hear you on the ulrich schnauss business! 100%.
anyhow, i don't think those albums are necessarily classics because they're the best works the artists have done, just that they were the right thing at the right time and something was changed because of them. (like...I wonder if Kid A would have come out the same way without LP5!)
