Gang Starr - The Ownerz

It's just one week away!

With singles like "Skillz" and "The Natural", this really
does sound like Gang Starr's best yet. The biggest release
of the year and I couldn't be more excited.

Who's with me?

Why titsworth? Because of the potential disappointment?

exactly.. best to be excited but not assume it'll be their
best work, cos then even if it's great it'll be
disappointing

True - I hear that.

BTW, if you haven't heard "Soul Supreme - The Saturday Night
Agenda" - Click for details - I suggest you do so immediately.
It starts a little slow but from track 3 to the end it's
amazing.

are you guru or premo? if not why do you care? they did a
great job at keeping it safe for MONTHS. some magazines
published reviews of it back in april (i think they changed
the album since then though). i think it leaking just a week
before it comes out will do it some good since it'll still
be fresh when it actually comes out. it's a really banging
album!

i know, i read it the other day.. the copy that leaked
yesterday must've been a retail copy, maybe from a japanese
early release?

why dont people's promo releases have nasty amounts of noise
every 30secs in the track? thats what i'd do, ok it wouldnt
take long for people to remove them but at least i'd make em
go to the effort

offline Archrival on 2003-06-19 11:03 [#00747869]

No, no im not angry, and im not Premo ofcourse not ;)

its just that they had a new way to keep the rippers off.

and uhm SUPPORT GOOD MUSIC!!!! buy the album when its
released (yall know that Premo is one of the best beat
makers).

and all the DEFJUX promos have a really annoying
girl-computer voice on all over the songs... thats a good
way to keep the rippers off.

But its all good to download it, do whatever yall want
to,but please support if u like it :)

ANARCHY!!!!

because the people reviewing the album would give it a 1
star out of 5 if they had to sit through that junk! :) i'm
sure the ones who have to listen to the MCA and Def Jux
voices every 30 seconds per song go crazy after a while as
it is, i can't imagine dealing with grating noise.

arch i think they were successful, none of the promos seem
to get encoded.. i really do think this is a retail copy,
which is out of their control.

speaking of retail, for all those interested, this is a
really great value. an exclusive mix cd w/ unreleased gang
starr tracks and a nice new t-shirt in addition to the
album.

"gangstarr - do you wanna mess with us? - one of the best
yet!"

haven't heard the new stuff but i'm excited that they're
back! about friggin' time! though nothing will beat 'step
into the arena' as far as i'm concerned!

Is primos scratching really that tight live ?
I know he can't do the exact same thing as on the records ,
then he would have to have the coordination of an octopuss
and six atleast turntables.
But still ?

Coming from a Gang Starr devotee such as me this is big
praise but I think this is their best work yet. The
production is nuts and Guru is amazing as usual.

We got Gunz!

Get this.

thanks for the info it sounds great as usual for gangstarr
but i'm not feelin this glamourising guns / shooting people
stuff... i thought gangstarr were more intelligent than
that.

they're not "glamorizing guns", just employing them as an
apt metaphor readily understood by all, and documenting
their prevelance in society, especially among urban areas.
listen to the lyrics before you judge them!

Do me a favour. They are just pedalling the same shit as
everyone else at the moment, coz it sells.

EG:

"You can catch a few shells
One go right through your polo, man
Usually I'm dolo and I gotta crazy team
Car kissed the ride on you, watch for the laserbeam
Shit, it's that Ol' G Flavor
Remind you of a quarter bodega and that oldie behavior
All point but I ain't tryna scuffle with chumps
My long joints got the culture power plus the double pump
Troublesome, to anyone who stands in the way
I'll stand and I'll spray, FUCK if ya man is in the way"

"They are just pedalling the same shit as

This album is unlike anything else at the moment. There's a
load of positivity on the record as a whole - I chose this
track in my previous post because the beat is sensational
not for the message.

titsworth - still love Hard To Earn.

i saw their performance on Conan O'Brien last friday, and i
must say that i was pleasantly surprised, because for a
while i had an unfounded fear that they would go in some
sort of jay-z meets justin timberlake direction, so i'm
greatful that primo's production is still as top-notch as
ever and they haven't turned into corporate ho's.

the only disappointment? primo didn't bother to scratch at
all - all the scratching was straight off the dub plates he
was spinning - instead bothering himself with totally
unnecessary background raps. what's up with that?

This is the first Gangstarr album that doesn't do it for me.
All of their previous releases were instant classics but
this only just manages to stand out from the crowd and
that's only because it's gangstarr. That said, there hasn't
been an awful lot of hiphop that has me going like "OMG THIS
SHIT IS DA BOMB" lately so maybe it's me.
But I'm positive it's not.
me,
that is.

Some of it is just not what i'd expect from a gangstarr
album... maybe to appeal to a wider audience..?

But generally, its good.

the dj or the 'hype man' will usually fill in from time to
time to approximate the sound of the record. at certain
points in a song, the emcee's voice will be heard
overlapping itself, wherever he wants to accentuate a part
of the rhyme.. also, when performing live, one might need
some time to catch his breath, so to make sure there isnt
any silence where there shouldn't be, the dj or the hype man
will fill in from time to time.. to fulfill both purposes
