Ragga is the ghetto influenced version of Reggae...where hip
hop's roots lay in street based blues Ragga is the hard
lyric, agressive version of Reggae usually laced over a
hiphop/dub style track.

the dj scud album is pretty decent, the bug i didnae like.
subtle difference. dj scud is a nice crossover, bug is too
obvious.

ragga or dancehall reggae is electronic dancefloor-oriented
reggae, usually with very rhythmic and fast vocals.

scud is on the lines of the bug, but less obvious as
earthleakage said,

probably the best album rephlex has released this year..

ragga is this
"yes irie to man for who organise dis lickle party. you is
feltin da bass al tru da yard. rockin in a kingston
style..."continues in daft patois of kingston

ragga is like harder faster reggae, but usually without the
swing and the beats are usually emphasising the offbeat
style. it is to reggae what jungle is to hip hop

offline ecnadniarb on 2003-06-17 19:33 [#00745479]

or hip hop is to blues.

hear me now - i wouldn't say that scud or the bug are
actually ragga though. they are influenced by ragga, but
not actually ragga in its proper sense. still good stuff
though, i reckon the bug is the best rephlex album for
ages.

*awaits flaming*

yeah, the bug is awesome
(i prefer dj scud tho...but only because i like rougher
stuff lately)
when it comes to music quality the bug is surely much
better!

i picked up the scud lp and listened to it in a record shop
after a heavy night out the night before and it scared me.
so i didn't buy it - maybe i should have another listen.

the dub track on the bug album is the nuts.

I wouldnt say Bug is ragga. The Instrumentals are too
progressive for that.

Bombs Bass & Weapons is genius..

thats what makes them so good, it's their own take on a
scene that isn't massively good, violent, rude etc and
bringing in the braindance element to offer a nice
alternative
like what Prefuse 73 does to hip-hop and Four Tet to jazz

Not to forget:

Elephant Man
TOK
Lexxus
Beenie Man

All excellent dancehall/ragga vocalists.

For producers I rate:

Lenky (producer of Diwali rhythm)
Tony CD Kelly (producer of Bookshelf)
Ward 21 (producers of Puke, Bloodstain)
