Reaktor was awarded by Future Music to be the best VST
instrument: "There is one VSTi that stands out: Reaktor.
It's the king"
taken from NI site

yes... alls i hear is praise...

it almost seems too good to be true...

id be curious to find out if people had any complaints...

system use? if its going to be running all of my suff
(multiple synths and samplers) can my system handle it? 1
ghz, 1 gig RAM

"system use? if its going to be running all of my stuff"

It uses a lot of CPU. I don't think it can run everything at
once in realtime but that can be solved by rendering to
audiotracks...

true true...

also the new freeze function in logic should work

A friend of mine has Reaktor 4 which runs happily enough on
his P4 with 1 gig RAM. I have only had limited experience
with it, but to call it powerful is a total understatement.
There is literally nothing that you can do with it.

The CPU use never gets about 60% on my mates computer.

see the "I'm Screwed :/" thread- I'm frantically finishing a
report for tommorow!

Quick, slightly less in depth than normal comments:

I've used Reaktor 3 a fair bit, almost exclusively using the
existing ensembles as softsynths in my own tracks, albeit
with customised patches. I have found it very hard to make a
good synth from scratch in it- I can make your normal
2 oscillator thing that just sounds like every other
freeware softsynth, but that to me is pointless. I won't
spend hours on something "custom" if the end result is
something that I could DL in 5 minutes- my time could be
better spent on tracks (or reports!). On a more serious
note, I imagine if you got good enough at it and were
prepared to invest the time to learn it properly you would
have one of the most "controllable" sound pallettes
available outside of Kyma and CSound.

I've heard reaktor 4 is a lot better for making your own
synths due to the way it uses the "component" parts to put
synths together. Not having used 4, I can't really comment
on this aspect, but if it's as good as people make out I'll
be interested in going back to it.

As an aside, the main reason I haven't been bothered to
delve deeper into making custom synths with it is that I do
all my modular synth stuff in Vaz (don't think it's
available for mac though...)

Now, back to the report :)

literally nothing you "CANT" do with it?

;)

but thanks for that info! Does he run it solo or with a
sequencer?

Depends on what we are doing. If we are just generating
loops then we run it solo, but for the synths and effects we
sequence it through Cubase.

We have the occasional stability problem where all of a
sudden it will generate an error and shut down, but that is
only ever when building a synth or ensamble and never when
using it for the generation of the track. (I hope that made
sense :P)

I like customizing my stuff...
and I have a good understanding of synthesis. I think ill
even be using reaktor in my advanced programmable synthesis
class...

But speaking of csound... im learning that right now too. It
sounds amazing... but damn.... its a different way of
thinking... ALL #s! I dont know how to run it through logic
yet... but apprently you can. But im no where near good
enough with it to use it solely.

I haven't started using it by myself yet because I am
finding the wrench away from Reason to much to bare :D but I
definitely plan on switching as soon as possible.

yeah, I got ya. Its cause you patch it in a wierd way, that
isnt supposed to be done... so it crashes?

it can also be a burst to the processor, like when we
changed 4 granulators together with a rythmn generator. It
worked when we first started it but as soon as we began
changing the connections between the modules we ran into
trouble. Had we have stopped the audio and done the changes
it would probably have been fine :)

heheh

im done with reason. its all over now!

im so happy. I was getting really pissed with it. I kept
finding all these limitations...

i mean, dont get me wrong... there is ALOT you can do with
it... and its easy to use, and cheap.... but when it comes
down to it... there is much better sounding/flexible stuff
out there.. and im ready for it!

so heres a question...

I have toyed with Abvsynth, and thought it rocked... but
with reaktor i wouldnt need it right?

in fact... doesnt buying reaktor kind of make buying any of
NI's other products... silly?

Cant reaktor do everything all the other stuff can do?

offline ecnadniarb on 2003-06-16 10:24 [#00743019]

Theoretically yes, but it is not always as easy to
do...while you can basically produce any sound you want with
Reaktor the graphical interface is still not a refined as
what you would get in Absynth, also Reaktor would be more
resource intensive than say Absynth as it hasn't been
optimised for that one particular task.

Reaktor is lush. I have 3 and 4 on my comp at the moment. My
friend and I use it for doing lots of CPU intensive granular
stuff. It sounds brilliant. I run Cubase SX with Reason
plugged in through rewire and then

2 VSTis (reaktor 3 + 4) generally running homemade granular
stuff.... my comp juist a bout amanges that but its not
often that I use the full set up. Certainly as a vsti it is
fine on its own (i have 2.5ghz 384mb). Reaktor is about as
close as you'll get to a Nord without buying one.

id say its better then a nord

more flexible

I think Reaktor is a complete hazzle to work with... More
than one synth and the view gets totally crowded. More than
three synths and you'll have to start worrying about CPU
power. Version 4 adresses some of those issues though.

I like it for experimenting with - building stuff from
scratch and then feel a little proud that I've pulled it
off...but nothing more really. But on the other hand, I can
imagine that if you don't see those things as a problem
you'll probably be a very happy user.

I always feel that absynth sounds a bit _too_ nice.

I agree that the interface can get very cluttered. But I
find 4 to be a lot better than 3 (although I literally only
spent about 2 days messing about with 3)

i think Absynth can sound too nice. Same thing I find with
reason. anything you make solely with Reason comes out
sounding as though you did. I only use redrum now... cos the
synths in Reaktor are much better and the sequencer in
Cubase is too.

Maybe in Reason 1 that was the case but I don't think it is
any more.

yeah maybe its just me. my friend says i'm a bit harsh on it
but I just think its good for Trance and thats about it.
