He he, it is legal and the recipe is the same- the
brand I tend to drink (La Fee) is made to a 19th century
recipe and is the only totally authentic absinthe accredited
by the absinthe museum of Paris. I'm also fond of Hapsburg.

Nope, I've not had chartreuse... not sure if you can get it
here/if it's legal. Should be as it's just thujone in it
(same as absinthe) that's the "questionnable" ingredient.
Amusingly Absinthe is illegal to consume in france, but
legal for production for export. I imagine chartreuse is the
same.

It's funny there was this big absinthe publicity surge when
la fee got released (98?)and people were worried we'd all be
alcoholics like turn of last century france. What no one
seemed to realise was that the problems all stemmed from the
fact it was cheaper in measure than an equivalent volume of
wine and the general public were drinking it every night
rather than wine.

In reality, you can now only get it in a few bars or
classier off licences (although Tescos and Waitrose both
have distribution deal with la fee!). A lot of absinthes in
more commercial bars like weatherspoons are "weak" 40/50%
stuff and contain little thujone. I've only been in one bar
that served obscenely strong (89.5%) Hapsburg absinthe.
Although at £5 a shot and the effect it has, no one drinks
more than one a night (I have a bottle of it at home and I
can't drink more than one shot a day of it, despite getting
through a whole bottle of La Fee - 68%) so there's not
really the problems traditionally associated with it.

Just glad these reformed alcoholics didn't manage to get it
banned. Just because they're weak willed fools without the
willpower to moderate their drinking, doesn't mean us
"normal" drinkers shouldn't be allowed to cut loose on it
from time to time :D
