Come on - they didn't say that?! That's hysterical! And they were all acoustic instruments too right? :D

Like their "random beat generation" programs or whatever they supposedly used on Confield? I don't know much about musical terms, or the exact meaning of these things called "sequencers" heh........................

i suspect theyre more talking about real time phrasing / sequencing on the fly than random generators

Do I believe in interviews? Yes, I've seen living proof that they exist.
Do I believe everything people say in their interview is true? Ofcourse not. Take RDJ for example.

In a swedish interview they said most of their stuff is made live , i guess thats why people experience their music as "random"
And in another interview they seemed to get irritated when the reporter was asking about randomness in their music etc.
"everything's note by note"
I don't get that ,what do they mean by that ?

how you could not sequence i do not understand. that would only be possible if say...you had ten hands each so each note and sound would be played live and recorde. and i reckon that if i had ten hands...i'd be preoccupied with other things...

This suggests to me an octopus-like miultiplicity of phalluses such as is rarely seen outside of Japanese tentacle-hentai!

note by note.....means sequencing to me.
now if they said they "PLAYED" all of it, then yeah there'd be no sequencing..
but then what about quantizing? does that count as sequencing? probably...
it's childish how so many IDM producers are all "Haha I'll fuck with their heads!!!" in interviews etc etc by just saying bullshit.
It's dumb. It's also disturbingly similar to the whole "Break the system!!!" teen angst shit kids go through when they're 14...

That's what I read in the interview.
If there are more, I'm okay with it as long as the penguins are okay with it.

I have read autechre interviews where they were pretty much against the idea of random generation of sequences or otherwise. Seemed like they liked to do everything manually at least as far as mapping out sequences.
I would think that doing anything other than playing the parts live straight to the recording would be considered sequencing of some sort. It could be that they meant they didn't step sequence anything but performed the parts in real time and then arranged them into the songs. I think even real time phrase sequencing requires the loops to be prewritten, only difference being that they are brought in on the fly rather than arranged. The only other thing I could think of would be some sort of advanced arpegiation like the Korg Karma has but it doesn't sound like they used anything like that.

or 'note by note' may mean that they didn't use any loops but did each new measure from scratch.
