ok, so i got a bit of a japanese moviecraze goin on right
now, after watching "ichi the killer, kakashi, ninja scroll,
spirited away". I saw some more before that but now I'm
really into it.

Any recommendations from you guys?
Which japanese movies(new/old/anime) can't be missed out
on?

btw I've had "princess blade" in my hands several times but
everytime i put it back on the shelf. Anyone see it?

just about anything directed by takeshi kitano. i recommend
1. hana bi (fireworks)
2. sonatine
3. kikujiro (this one is a very sweet movie, like
sweet/touching, but it's very very good)
4. brother (this one has omar epps in it but again, very
good)

kitano's style is extremely low energy with very little
dialogue. but if you can appreciate his style, most of his
movies are good. otherwise, some people get bored with his
stuff.

one of his movies that i didn't like was boiling point, so i
don't recommend it.

the japanese version (original version) of the Ring is
actually called "Ringu" just to avoid confusion. much more
subtle than the american version. both i thought were good
in their own respects.

Anything by Beat Takeshi. Anything by Kurosawa. Kobayashi's
"Samurai Rebellion" and "Harakiri" (one of the best!!).
Inagaki's "Samurai Trilogy"

Also, Miyazaki's "Castle of Cagliostro" is my favorite
anime.

ok, so far I've recently seen:
- Kagemusha
- Yojimbo
- Hidden Fortress
- Seven Samurai
- Battle Royale
- Princess Mononoke
- Ichi the killer
- Tetsuo:iron man
- Tetsuo II:body hammer
- Kakashi
- Ninja Scroll
- Metropolis
Some I've seen further back:
- Spirited Away
- Akira
- Ghost in the shell
- Ring O

Still have lots to go, I've got sonatine and gonin rented.
So far, there have been few disappointments, I must say I
was totally blown away by princess mononoke(spirited away
had the same effect), and kurosawa's films. After Yojimbo
my appreciation for Sergio Leone's a fistful of dollars has
decreased drastically, as it borrows(read carboncopies)
heavily from this one.
I also loved the over the top violence of ichi the killer
and BR.
Tetsuo was hardcore, I could even see where Aronofsky got
some of his inspiration from, but of course tetsuo could be
traced back to eraserhead too.
the second tetsuo sucked though.
That said, metropolis disappointed me in how they combined
the CGI with the traditional anime, it didn't really work
out very well imo, and I loathed the music and didn't dig
the look of the characters much, but I understand it's
supposed to be like that since it was a very old manga.
Also, Ghost in the shell failed to impress me, perhaps I
need to see it again, I found the way you got dropped right
in the setting a bit confusing, so I couldn't follow the
story very well. Ok I'm hungry for more.

brilliant indeed. Now I couldn't find alot on the directors
deadeight recommended so that's a shame.

VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST

this isn't a request or a suggestion.

hehe, actually I've had vampire hunter D in my hands quite a
few times, as I like both anime and vampire flicks. Ok I'll
rent them next, but I prolly won't find those other 2 you
suggested. But try I will. If only because it's nice to see
where hollywood rips all it's ideas from.

if you're into horror or the surreal i recommend the
following (all live action, some might be chinese or from
hong kong, it's tough to remember, but i think they're all
japanese) -

pulse
cure
dark water
seance
gemini
bullet ballet
the phone
st. johns wort
the untold story
story of ricky
ebola syndrome
audition

and my personal favorite as of late - be warned it is
offensive in every possible way - Vistor Q (by Takeshi Miike
same director as Ichi the Killer and Audition).

my .02

ikiru. one of kurasowas greatest.
grave of the fireflies. probably the best anime movie out
there besides ghost in the shell and spirited away.

man there are so many good japenese movies (and asian for
that matter... "Shaolin Soccer" is one of my favourite
movies from that year!!!).
Can anybody reccomend some underground movies? I know
they're into gore (even "Faces of Death" beat "Star Wars" in
the theatres when it was released in 1978)...
So underground movies, please reccomend them. Not just for
the gore, but because they are great movies!

i recommend every Takeshi Kitano movie.
also some Nagisa Oshima and Shoei Imamura.
Takashi Miike has some nice ones.

Key_Secret: Of the ones I previously recommended, I
strongly suggest 'Vistor Q". It has all the elements of an
underground ie 'cult' film. A few of the topics touched
upon in this family in crisis film (somehow it ends on an
uplifting note) include: incest, massive amounts of
lactation, drug abuse, self abuse, necrophelia, murder,
urine humiliation and more. It's by Takeshi Miike who also
made: Ichi the Killer, Audition, Dead or Alive, Fudoh and
Happiness of the Katukuris.

Others in the underground style but good vein include - Evil
Dead Trap, Ebola Syndromw, The Untold Story, Wild Zero,
Versus, BioZombie.

Finally, if you want REALLY, REALLY underground gory, does
this have any value whatsoever kinda stuff. you can check
out 'The Guinea Pig' Series. Borders on Snuff. Some of
them are good, others terrible.

Hope that helps a bit.

Ok, now I definitely need to see this movie. And i saw a
guinea pig once I think, one where some japanese woman is
being followed on the streets, and then she clubbed and
drugged, next shot she's bound up on some operating table
and still under heavy influence of sedatives, and some
hobby-doctor starts working away on her with all sorts of
peripherals. Cutting off limbs and stuff, gutting her til
she's gone. Looked well disturbing enough to me though.
