How to start a DIY label

I've been thinking of starting a DIY label.... I'm
unemployed at the time, and I'd like something that will get
me just enough money to get by, but I want it to be
something I like doing.

I'm thinking of finding musicians online, and making some
compilations at first, 20 track comps for sale at about 5 to
7 bucks, and sell them on cdvalue online, since they only
add 1$ to the asking price.

It would be a rough start, but i think with patience and a
little help i could pull it off.

any suggestions or points?

this has some nice tips - its on the old Fat Cat site, so
some info could be out of date. you need the d.i.y.
resource
.

Make sure you work with people who won't bail on you.

I run this (tiny) label: planetarium records. Since the music we
put out is extremely obscure and has a very small audience,
we release limited quantities of the albums. We also only
make cd-r's and sell those. The good thing is that the cost
of the materials needed to make these cdrs with the artwork
and everything is so low, we make the money back rather
quickly. We can't afford to give advances to artists yet,
but we split the profits 50/50 with the bands. Is there
anything specific you had a question about? Maybe I could
help a bit.

also, as an artist, I would be into being on one of your
comps.

the only thing i'm really worried about is funding. i think
i can score online distribution. i just want to make enough
money to survive.... and buy survive, i simply mean food.

doesn't asking for help contradict the idea of "do it
yourself"

no one can ever completely do it by themself, but i think he
means he wants to be able to make the kind of decisions and
strategems that only a smaller label can make, whilst being
able to eat.

A cool way to do it is to collect dole payments while you
run the label. ;)

that's quite true, tibbar. i think i could make a bit of
money for it by buying cds wholesale and then selling them
to people at lower prices... someone was telling me that
with some indie labels you can send them something like 50
bucks and they'll send you 20 cds.
