this is the scariest thing i have done in my porsche 951. last night, rather than go directly home after my psychology class, i figured i'd drive to one of the ends of the town just for the hell of it. i make a left turn on to diamond, one of two main streets in our town. from the stop sign while making my left i get on the throttle a little, breaking traction and drifting into my lane, then i proceed down the road. breaking traction is easily done in my car, and, also it had been raining for a good two hours. as i go down the road, past the gas station, up a very subtle hill and bend, i come to a slightly dipping straightaway that then goes into a slight slope, as i cruise through this section at around 45-50 mph, someone decides to get on my ass. i don't know if they're tailgating or trying to initiate a race, but in wet weather, they shouldn't be so close. as i get to the top of the slope, i downshift into third and proceed to accelarate to around 80, exactly the thing you are supposed to do in bad weather (heavy amounts of sarcasm implied there). at the top of this slope also, it levels out and goes into a bend of about 90 degrees overall and is 200-300 ft long with two lanes for each side of the road. normally i take this bend at 60 very easily and calmly in dry weather, on a wet day, slow speeds are neccessary. i begin my entrance into the bend in the inner lane and then shift into the outer lane to make my way around a subaru. i speculate i was traveling at the speed of 55-60 mph. as i'm 1/3 of the way into the bend, i realize that i have to much speed and begin to ease into the brakes, but wet pavement and centrifugal force decide that i am no longer in control. with my cars 50/50 weight distribution, slides begin with the back and then the front is slowly pulled along with it; so rather than my back breaking away violently, the whole car will slide first and ease itself into the spin. i begin the process of countersteering as i begin my slide into the opposing lane, but because the spin has been initiated and was pulling me right, my front tires were only lined up with the spin, allowing them to roll, rather than to provide resistance to slow my spin. in a matter of seconds, the subaru that i was seeing next to me out of the side of my eye, i was now staring at with my headlights lighting up the whole side of their car. then, i looked to my left, which was up the road, to look for oncoming traffic. i see a car coming towards me and i brace for impact, expecting my ass end to smash into his hood. luckily, he makes it past me okay. in another given second, my spin is still hurling my car around and i'm now looking at the headlights of the car that had been tailgating me as he is looking at mine. then i feared that i was going to smash into the guardrail as my spin was stilling pulling me across the road. nonetheless, i apply the brakes and i feel my spin begin to slow and throw it into first in hopes of possibly taking control of the last bit of the spin and driving off. however, during the spin, my car of course stalled and i had not realized it. my car was brought to a stop diagnally across the two opposing lanes after spinning 270 degrees at 55-60 mph hour, but because of the spin, i was more or less facing the proper direction for the two lanes i was taking up. i then attempted to drive off, but failed to do so because the car was stalled, not providing power for my light either, making my dark grey car hard to see at night. i see a car coming my way through the bend and i frantically turn the ignition, only bringing the life back to my car after 2-3 tries. i then hastily took off down the road having a laugh because 1) i had gotten out of that situation without doing damage to me, my car, or anyone elses and 2) it was scary as hell. |
