There's something about Plaid...

That makes me resist thier music. I think it's the sounds.
With almost all other "IDM" I visualize the music by
associating a picture to every sound, and I just cant seem
to do that with plaid. All I see in my head is two guys
making goofy tracks that don't hold together very well. I've
listened to Double Figure many times in the last few days,i
t seems like there are lots of good parts but no really good
songs...maybe like my begginings with Autechre, I'm just
"not getting" the music

I love them... what can I say?

I think you should start kind of a journey through their
music

start with trainer
then not for threes
then rest proof clockwork
then double figure
and finally p-brane

whey this?
you will understand that they are great, but in a diferent
way... they seem to look for nice sounds... not difficult,
kind of very pop oriented idm... their melodies are the
easiest to find... the most mellow idm maybe out of the big
6

sometimes they seem to follow autechre... but in the soft
melody candy way

There is something about Plaid that makes me love thir music
probably more than any other (with the possible exception of
Ae, on occassion) electronic artist making their music. They
examplify the height of creativity in making good techno (in
the true detroit spirit of the word) that is incredibly
complex while remaining extremely listenable. Thats an
extremely difficult thing to do and very few bands manage to
do that.

To me Ae/Plaid/Black Dog/Coil occupy the same spot of
unabashed admiration.

a bit too light n fluffy for me. I like their melodies and
percusson but a lot of it just turns to fluff too soon.
Great live on the Warp buss tour though... fucking
brilliant. (that was after their Double Figure tour, which
was crappola)

I cant really understand how people dont see their great
evolution in their sound... they are last in the current
poll on that matter...
I mean, they evolved much more than boc for sure
this doesnt mean they are better (for emthey are though)
but look at bocs first and last release... then do the same
with plaid... the answer is obvious

i know what you mean, i have double figure and whenever i
try to listen to any song i just cant concentrate and never
make it to the end of a track...they just dont have any edge
or point to them...like they are missing something very
important but i cant tell what...they dont seem to have any
imagination all the tracks seem to go nowhere...perhaps
people like them for emotion, i always find it hard finding
emotion in any artist....

The beats, I admit are not avante-garde like Ae...they are
in the true techno traditions...they are not meant to
overwhelm or to engage like Ae does. As Derrick May once
said...when he starts out on a track, he does not even start
out with the beat, but starts on the strings and places the
drums on at the end. The drums of techno are more about
criss-crossing, dense polyrhythms than straightforward
groove. Just listen to the chattering hi-hats on a Black Dog
track..or even the rhythm section on something like Abla
Edio. Plaid are masters at creating superbly dense techno
tracks...and they have only gotten better with time. And
those melodies....killer melodies...A melody does not have
to be a minor key atonal sequence to be great. As Arnold
Schoenberg himself said, 'there is still a lot of great
music to be written in the key of C'. And Plaid prove that
to be true.

I don't know why I am explaining it to you. If you don't get
the magic of Plaid once...you never will. It is kind of like
the Boards Of Canada thing. Either you get it or you don't.
But if you do, boy oh boy, are you in for a ride or what.

yeeees i agreee......
...it is special way of it - you must listen to Plaid like
child , just watch artworks , feel the music like child ,
dont try to understand it...
....but it's true....if yoiu not get it now - you will never
will :)()(

Plaid got my vote on that poll...as my mate once said to me
with a tear in his eye (I thought)

"They just make beautiful music merg!"

:-)

Their beats rock, as do their chooons!

For me the best thing about them is their variety...anyone
imagine Ae doing something beautiful these days? LMAO!

Awright....just cause I love Plaid...don't mean you get to
diss Ae in front of me. So fine their last release was
kinda, how do I put this, boring? Ae are just as amazing as
Plaid in their own way. It is just so sad how so many people
that love one cannot see the other.

Sorry if that came acrossa as a bit hard. I am kinda
terribly fond of both o them. Now if you wanted to take the
piss out of that Aphex guy... :P

I don't dislike Ae at all, I just think it's sooo obvious
that their early stuff is about 34234 times better than
their later stuff that's all!

Have you often come across Plaid fans disliking Ae and vice
versa then?

mr. McBob put it very nicely.

plaid have no edge, no intensity.

which makes that their music bores me more quickly.

btw, draft 7.30 is filled with melody, even easier to hear
then on confield.

ae are so much better than plaid will ever be. i do like
plaid but you can't even compare them to autechre.

and merg, new ae is by no means any worse than the early
stuff.

offline nacmat on 2003-06-06 06:49 [#00729585]

I prefer autechre... but I love plaid

draft is very emotional too

its not about emotions... plaid is just more pop... but in
the best way... in a lovely way

should answer that question. :)

Sadly enough, yes.

Plaid could have more edge IMO, but after listening to a lot
of other "harder" electronic music, Plaid is great to relax
to.

ae's new stuff is better than their old.....and there is so
much relaxing idm already, plaid are unnesseccary for me....

yeah, they really do! But I think Double Figure is kind of a
weak point in their career. Haters should check out their
earlier records if you haven´t already. I rcently listened
to Not For Threes for the first time in ages and realised
how fucking strong an album that is.

i agree nacmat,
if you include their black dog stuff, they have evolved in
quality quite a bit. they didn't get my vote in the poll
but it was a close decision. over all i think ae have
progressed more in a technical aspect as well as in general
song writing.

as for plaid, my favorite album is Rest Proof Clockwork. its
the one that initially hooked me on their unique melodic
style. I'd say its a little more accessible than Double
Figure as well.

plaid is awesome. I really must buy more of their
albums. (can't find them in any store though :-( I'm gonna
have to order).

I only have Rest Proof Clockwork and P-Brane... but i very
much prefer them over my autechre-collection. If my house
was on fire and i could only bring two cd's... it'd be
byebye Chiastic Slide & Confield ;-) (my favourite
ae-albums).

I just love plaid so much! It's in their melodies, yes...
but also the amount of joy and liveliness that is in all of
their tracks. You can just hear they're having alot of fun
themselves... it sounds more like a band having a
jam-session, than two nerds behind their laptops.

Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with autechre... i love
autechre aswell (lord knows why these two bands are being
compared in this thread though... they are so different).
But plaid is just... even better :-) Only BoC can compare...
maybe.

I love 'em. They are kind of where "IDM" and "electronica"
meet. They are a great mix of Orbital and AE. They got my
vote.

That's a real shame that you are unable to get into Plaid.
I might be one of the few on this board, but I feel that
Plaid are the best artist currently on the Warp roster.

I didn't like "trainer" much either. Try "not for threes" or
"Rustproof Clock"
