feel so much love for AFX, Black dog/plaid, BOC,... but i hate the name "IDM". From the very begiinig back in '91 until now i have heard more than 100 different names for it, but name "IDM" is aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhh!
Intelligent Dance Music. Intelligent: In that case you say that other music is not. Dance: Impossible to dance on AFX AE, BOC,...... Music: some pieces of afx are no music but sounds. Let's try to give it another name. Who?

Just call it music. That is all it is. We don't call Steve Reich or John Cage ICM. Radiohead is not IRM. So why should Aphex or Ae or Plaid be IDM. Thats so stupid.
Plain music suits it just fine.

Fucking get over it. Most lables/genre's are loathed but thay allow easy catagorisation for the simple minded, its part of human nature, move on with life it's not worth getting het up about.

i say get over it. it doesn't really matter what it's called. you don't even have to use it. You can just call it 'Multifunctioned Electronic Music' or whatever you like to describe it

As much as I dislike the term, I use it (usually in speech marks to show I'm being ironic and "hip" ;) ) as everyone on the scene knows what you're refering to by it.

How IDM is made-
"Musicians" make programs that randomly generate melody and drums, these run continuosly churning out new music. "A&R" guys are actually sweat shop style workers rammed into warehouses, each with a terminal listening to a different stream of random sound each. There is an option every 10 seconds of saving the sound. They save the best bits (on average, one 10 second clip per worker is saved per day). The "producer" is actually a program that pitch/tempo matches all the good bits together into tracks. The "Engineer" then listens to this to check that it is passable IDM. They then master it and mail it off to the label.
Different artists have factories of varying size, venetian snares owns the largest, hence he is so prolific, whereas AFX only has a few dozen employees so his tracks are few and far between.

yeah, I hate it when people try to push the term 'music' into too narrow a definition - to me, walking thru the streets is hearing music, walking thru the countryside is hearing music.
