Will they do a new album? Have they split up? Are they too old? I love this band. What's happening?

They've said they're pretty much wrapping it up (take the Stones, KISS and Aerosmith while you're at it). As I pointed out in another thread, they were pretty much finished after "The Wall" and when Roger Waters split off.
A lot of good that did for both parties... :P

Davd Gilmour is the number one guitar influence for me. If it wasn't for him, I would never have been able to play all the Wall solos when I was 16

Yeah, that cool...but by the mid-80s they were nowhere near the creators they were in the 70s (when Gilmour was truly great). No doubt they were still powerful live, but that power never showed up after the Waters split (and Waters didn't exactly rise to the occasion, either) in any recorded form.

earthleakage you cinic you! he's a mad fat plane-flying acid head. I don`t think he cares about HRH. He cares about ferraris and how The Wall is a profound treatise on alienation and despair.

meddle is their greatest album, i believe. so i s'pose i can agree with their earlier stuff being superior. but the division bell is great. *shrugs*

I agree that Meddle is the best album, but I totally disagree about the Division Bell, which is the smelliest steaming pile of fetid rotting horse bowels ever. Thinking about the Division Bell after A Saucerful of Secrets, Oscured By Clouds, or even the Wall, makes me cry it's so awful.
Just think how they'd be if Barrett was still with them. Syd Barrett's solo stuff was miles better than the same-era Floyd stuff.

i guess they really had to start again with saucer and syds departure. its amazing they managed to stick to it.
im a wall and piper man myself :)
wouldnt a new syd album be something else, albeit highly unlikely? im sure theres plenty of unreleased stuff (even still) waiting to be put into out hands.
you're dead right about the division bell, its fucking awful. and momoentary lapse isnt much better, only saved by one reasonably good song in 'on the turning away'.

Id be curious how much real unreleased Barrett stuff there was. I have the Crazy Diamond versions of the albums, with the extra tracks, plus I have the 7-disc Have You Got It Yet bootleg (which I think is 10 CDs now) and there's very little new (non-album) material. Just alternate takes and demos.
The early Floyd stuff always will be the best. I like a fair bit of the later stuff, but nothing beats those early single tracks like Arnold Layne and Point Me At the Sky :)

here, the laughing madcaps yahoo group, is a good place to start. I just found a link to a site that listed free ftp servers where I'm downloading volumes 8, 9 and 10 of HYGIY? right now. In SHN format.

just read the Mojo interview this month, good indication of where Floyd have been for the last 2 decades.
Once Waters decided to take the lead nobody was willing to go with it. which ultimately destroyed the band.
But its true the genius was there with Syd, just his whole outlook towards music made Pink Floyd unique back then, but they did develop over the years a s a unit without Syd before going shite, so you know, just be grateful for the stuff we can listen to.
My god, to here some of whats been in Syds mind for the last 2 decades would be fascinating.

lets see, pink floyd cds I have include: A Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle (actually this is a burned cd), Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and The Division Bell... so, no Syd Barret stuff...
I also have a live version of The Wall by Roger Waters, and a bunch of other crap singers and groups... it's a pretty lame rendition actually... live from berlin is what it is actually...

I have everything up to and including The Final Cut, which I never have liked. I also have two solo albums from Waters and Gilmour, which never impressed me.
I love the band, but what they do these days doesn't interest me. Another Syd Barret release would be interesting though.

By the way. Sucer Full Of Secrets was 50/50 Gilmour and Barret. The last song completely Barret.
"And what exactly is a joke?"

50/50 is probably pushing it, but I've never read any definite article on which guitarist played on which song.
There are 2 songs by Wright, which I think were written during the first album, and a group composition.
