So before my question for you all... a track I finished today, a study on chromatics, probably the most complex thing I've done to date.
Chromatic Study: Chromostudy.mp3
How do you approach music? Do you try and mimic what other people are doing and just subtley add your own thing, or do you try and do something different from anything you've heard so far in an attempt to push in a totally new direction?
Do you feel comfortable with your music style? Do you have enough of a grasp of what will change the sound how to accurately express emotions? Ever had an epiphany that ended up perfectly expressing an idea or picture you had in sound?
I'll answer after some other people do...

i don't really have one way to approach music. it depends. but usually i start by laying down a groove and go from there.
i don't usually try and mimic what other people do, though usually i have a vague preconception of what/type of mood i want to create ... and this i guess is influenced by other artists.
i don't know if i really have a style .. but i enjoy making music, so i guess that makes me comfortable.
i never really try and express explicit emotions like love/hate etc. but more vague ones ... (optimistic melancholy?) ... i'm usually happy with how it comes out, but its a constant matching up process, ie between the music and the idea or something.
i've never really had that perfect an idea i wanted to express - hence, no epiphany. but am stoked when i pull off a new break or loop or something.

Well yeah... I'm just asking to specify what makes you happy I guess? Just curious to people's approaches, don't plan on changing my own

Yeah, the best adjective to describe it for me is "flat" though... I like some of the things they did in it, and strangely enough it wasn't an inspiration for the track I did, I threw the track on just now...

I was never a fan of chromatics used just for the sake of being used...I don't mind them when they are introduced to avoid dissonance, but frankly, even under such cases, I find the dissonance easier to assimilate than heavy chromaticism. It is just a personal preference, thats all. Mild chromaticism that makes an appearance as accidentals in a few bars is okay by me.

well..
my approach is kind of odd really.
whenever i meditate i write songs..by mouth. i improvise while in my meditative phase thru beatboxing and humming simultaneously, and i've been doing it for the past couple years. once i make up sounds i like, i keep repeating them so they kinda float around in my head until i produce them through some instrumental medium. more often than not they remain only in my mind, but since i have more free time now, they just might come in handy. ;)

what makes me happy?
re: music ... the process. listening to the end product is pretty cool also.
i guess one sort of thing i try to do sometimes is adopt a more "live" approach to making music ... chopping and changing and all that jazz.

The Chromatic scale uses all thirteen "normal" tones... think of it playing every white and black key up a scale... it causes a lot of dissonance and strange harmonies
Like I said, it was a study, and very complicated, I nitpicked a lot of the tones to weave in and out of harmonies, I think it came out rather well

I find myself mimicing a lot of music lately, I don't feel quite confident to push things in a new direction, like the potential is there but it needs some watering to grow.
But I'm really happy with the style of music I produce, I find it always brings out something in me I wasn't expecting, like a subconscious thread to my music.
I made one short piano piece a few years ago, every time I play it I just go into mental remission, my short state of perfection on a steinway in the middle of nowhere

All of my pieces give me images though... this one, the best description I've heard is "A demented metalic circus pelted by acid rain" which kinda makes me happy
I wonder how much music is visual for people... do you guys see things when you create?
