Quitting Smoking

I decided Today to quit smoking, no smokes... I think that
this will be a very very hard thing to do, as I have been
smoking for years, but I really have been thinking about it
more and more lately, and of course its a healthy choice.

Anyone else quite succesfully before?

I never started smoking cigs, and I'm glad I didn't. Best of
luck to you in quitting. Are you gonna use the gum or the
patch?

I dont know if I will use anything or not, If after a day or
two I have lots of mental problems with quitting, ie:
withdrawl I will talk to my doctor I suppose.. I really just
want to quit for good, not bullshit myself.

thanks for the kind words folks.

:0)

Most people spend about $2000 a year. And thats a bit less
than a pack a day. Smoke more than a pack a day, then it
gets real expensive.

yeah that a good way of seeing it, thats probably the only
way ill ever stop - if i calculate how much money i'd save.
but unfortunately its much cheaper for you so that probably
won't work as well.

Try reading 'allen carr's easy way to stop smoking', The
title sounds crap but it's worked for lots of my
friends....give it a go.....I smoke 80 a day without fail!

you have my word cold turkey is very unpleasant. having
experienced it some 10 years ago, its like having a very bad
flu for 3 days. you sweat a lot and spend most time in bed.
and you don't sleep.

offline REFLEX from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) on 2003-05-24 21:12 [#00713538]

smokes here are 10 dollars a pack! they used to be 5 dollars
but then they raised it last year. I thought Id quit then,
but appearently not.. hmm... I dunno, the health reasons
alone are great enough I think for me, but money is a large
issue as well, thats like more gas money, weed or drinking
money.... whatever... It should work out, im gonna try hard.

My father stoped smoking after 40 years from one day to the
other...

I noticed he was eating alot of tic tac's in that period XD

I admire him for such a strong will though...

Yeah 10 dollars is a lot. Here they are about 4 i think? How
much can you get weed for? It might be worth it to smoke
weed instead of cigs. It'll ween you off, and then quitting
the weed wont be like gettinga flu for 3 days.

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2003-05-24 21:30 [#00713564]

isn't 4.50 in pounds about the equivalent of 10 Canadian
dollars? or 9 dollars? I thought the pound was about 2 of
our dollars...

I quit a few months ago. Best way, if you really are doing
it for yourself, and you have been thinking about it lately,
is to cut down over a few weeks. Don't tell anyone either
that you're quitting. If you tell people, and they know
you've had a smoke, they'll be like all dissappointed and
shit, and so will you. But don;t think of it as if you're
quitting. Just don't buy any packs, only bludge off people
if you really really want one. I did this for 3 weeks and no
one suspected that i was quitting, which made it easier.
Because you know when you tell people and then they see you
having a smoke they're like "you're soft" or "ooh yeah, sure
you are", etc..

It really is a good feeling once you go through all the hard
yards. It took me about 4 weeks all up to be totally clean.
I don't even think about it now, or even remember the
satisfaction of it. All i remember is smelling all the time.
I love feeling clean and healthy, it's a great feeling. This
time was my third time by the way, and longest and
definetely for good this time.

But really, it was a lot easier for me this time because 1)
Didn't tell anyone, didn't think of it as quitting or make
it a big deal - just didn't have any, and 2) I really really
wanted to quit. After not having a smoke at all for a few
days i loved the clean and healthy feeling.

Also, i used http://www.quit.org.au. I don't know if Canada has its
own, but use the Australian one if you like. Really really
helped.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Great tip! My tip is that the hardest smoke to loose is the
first in the morning. Once you go past it its a bit easier.
I am myself trying to quit but I am weak! ;)

The worst part is not the wanting a fag, but you realy do
feel like shit for ages,

You'll probably get a cold, you chest will feel like it's
full of gravel and you'll get very moody

Have fun =oD

I'm in the process of re-quitting myself, too - I started
again in January after having stopped for 14 months. I wish
myself able to fight the insanity for the next few days.

Yeah, I just stop cold - nothing like that gum or patches or
shit - I have to do it entirely by myself. Usually it works
after I give it a few test-runs, and cathc the rhythm.

admit you're incapable of staying off 'em forever, and keep
smoking. like i do. I enjoy smoking. I limit myself to a
pack every few nights though. Its enjoyable.

problem seems to be when a 40- a- day-er panics and tries to
give up altogether. Its unrealistic unless you have a bloody
good hold on your inner demons, and if you're at the stage
of being on 40-a-day , thats pretty unlikely.

Remember those lollies, or candy for Americans. Did you guys
have those cigarette shaped lollies called fags? Gay people
got pissed off and then they changed them to fads, but i
don't think they make them anymore.

I was gonna say something interesting but now i forgot.

REFLEX: Cool. Really check out http://www.quit.org.au. The stories
and articles on that site really helped me a lot. If you
plan it, it's a lot easier. The two times i quit before this
one, i just quit cold-turkey and used patches the other, but
i didn't want to quit, i still enjoyed smoking a lot. That
site gives you a lot of good reasons to quit.
