what would you guys recommend for someone who just wants to play around with noise?
im not too familiar with electronic equipment (303s, 606s, etc, differences)
what would yall recommend as a starters box, that could stil be useful later on (i.e., something that i wont want to upgrade from right away,) something that will allow me to play and tweak sounds and do as i wish,
pref under ~ $300 or so price range USD

hardware or software?
software you could probably get for free ... - where to start though.
tb-303 is a roland bassline synth tr-606 is a roland rhythm/drum machine

you could get a phatboy (midicontroller) and combine that with some software eg. Native Instruments Absynth

the korg electribe range is pretty tasty.
maybe the green or black one (forget the model names) would be most suited for you ..

software with a phatboy is probably the best way to go if you are on a budget.

Nah, want hardware.
Not on a budget too much, just dont know quite what im getting into, thus don't want to shell out a few grand for something I may hardly use...

I think i might be the only person alive that likes my setups being as software based as possible.
hardware is damn sexy, but besides that, it doesnt do it for me.
So, my reccomendation for a begginer would be "Reason" just because it can do alot for alittle...
but if you want hardware.... well... yes, I guess id reccomend the Korg Electribe series...

ive had the dr.202 groove for 4 yrs.. inexpensive and still doesnt disappoint.. altho i usually do have to compress the beats to give them more thickness since its only a 16-bit machine

I like Reason too (especially malstrom), but I find it falls down when it comes to using it with a midi controller. I know you use an oxygen 8 with it- have you had any difficulties assigning the rotaries to different bits like subtractor dials etc?

I didn't have a lot of money to spend so last week I bought an Evolution MC-249C which works a treat. Assigning in Reason is the easiest thing in the world to do with it. :D

im actually kind of sick of it... i mean its great for people starting out, and it sure as hell beat my hardware I had before... but Im finding limitations, and compared to other software, it just doesnt sound as good... but again, its good... just not great
and yes, I have had troubles assigning the rotaries... like... it has preset assignments i think... and I cant figure out how to unassign them, so I can assign the knobs I want... its probably in the manual... but im just too lazy to read it

A common problem seems to be people assigning dials to something on the controller, and the controller then actually moving two dials- the predetermined one and the custom one. Shame really as I imagine reason would be pretty good for live jams otherwise.
I like the "all in one"ness of it and I want to get it working on my ibook so I can go off for a walk/bikeride and then make tracks outside over the summer. I don't think it'd ever be my main program though.
Do you reckon you'll use it rewired into DP4 (does rewire work with that) just to be able to use malstrom (I can't think of anything that you could use to emulate the sound of that!) or eventually abandon it altogether?
BTW did you sort out that window problem on your parents' pc in the end?

yes... that happen as well... having 2 dials moving at once...
I used reason for that live laptop jam I participated in... and it worked rather well... I just used the preconfigured knob assignments... twiddled them to see what moved what, and then used it accordingly.
yes, it is nice having it all in one... what would REALLY make it kick ass though... is a much more powerful sequencer, and pluggin support. if they did that... it would rock alot harder.
Yes, it will be able to be used in DP4, but, once I get my other synths... I really dont ever see my self using it again...
making music on a laptop really changes everything... to be able to make music anywhere... its great. Havnt had a chance yet... but I really want to go sit under a tree and write music :)
I have written tracks on planes though... and thats fun as hell!
re: pc problem... no I didnt fix it... I should do that... gotta download that software thingy (spyware removed or something?)

They do seem to be making subtle improvements to the sequencer (like line drawing tool in automation, eraser etc.) and they are considering plugin support (in an interview one of the main propellerheads was saying that they didn't like the idea of using plugins due to the performance hit, but in future when machines are a bit beefier they may consider it).

for hardware i think the new roland box looks cool, but i havent had a go on one yet.. link its called the mc09 and is cheap but knowing what these boxes are like, not lacking. ( i own a sp303 and for 300quid it is great value for money).....
ive got the evolution mk249c as well and the assignable knobs work well with reason, but the sound out of reason is crap. i always have to send each channel on the mixer out solo'd and master each track in cubase or t-racks or out to tape and back or via some other outboard stuff. reason alone isn't really a solution, but its a great start.

I fell out with reason but I can't find a sequencer that actually works well...Cubase wouldn't work with any VSTi's, Sonar XL crashes a lot...haven't tried Logic yet...what is it like?
