warp goes TOP 40

does anyone reckon warp will eventually get so big that
they'll be able to payola their way into the MTV Top 40?!?

will there ever be a time when we'll be hearing/seeing, say,
ae or squarepusher on constant rotation in the american
massmedia?

will warp sooner or later go the way of similarly
idealistically minded labels of the 60s (say, electra,
virgin, etc.) and grow so large that they will lose their
quality control and start churning out Top 40 IDM for
cash?!?

this is all theoretical and speculative at this point, but
any thoughts on the possibility of the above ever happening?

I doubt it. But music like what Warp turns out might 'pop'
in centuries to come. At least I'd like to think so.

i hate this pretentious atitude about warp going top 40.
if i saw autechre hitting top 40, i'd be glad for them.
fair enough, if i strted hearing it on a-list radio 1 all
day, i'd be kind of weirded out.
i think you can hear idm's influence on some pop music these
days already anyway.

well you can forger your snobbish more underground than
though attitude cos i bought lfo lfo in fucking woolworths
when it ws in the top ten over 12 years ago - boc's last one
went top 40 in the uk - aphex has had several top 40 hits
,,,,
yeah the music's really got so much worse since artists got
popular - tricky disco again in the early 1990's yeah top
twenty - nightmares on wax - "yawn"...

right....

relativley in term s of what they do - ie obtuse and
difficult electronic music they are very popular .

selling loads of records is one thing and for people like
aphex twin, autechre, etc. it is good to see them succeed in
such a way because their music deserves to be heard by a
wider audience

BUT

going all corporate-whore is quite another. that's moreso
what i had in mind. does anyone think warp will ever turn
into a corporate record conglomerate churning out stuff
purely for profit at any point in the future? no danger of
that now, mind, but who knows ... money gets in the way of
ideals a lot of times.

I think it would be good if more styles of music got into
the charts. The music is so shit today and when good record
labels did manage to shift enough music they all combined in
the charts making the music around more interesting and
diverse. The only reason the charts are shit is because of
the labels with so much money can elevate themselves like
brand names over others. Why shop at kids music zone when
you are exposed to warp records? If a good few record labels
could influence the charts I think you would see an impact
and change on music in general. The government should know
that when the music of a society changes, the whole society
will change. Perhaps a diverse chart would be a good thing?

sounds good, they don't apprreciate music like an olderr

heh - like the bit about music and society changing - remem
ber the criminal justice act - the one autechre did a record
against - that ws a legislation to stop lifestyles that had
occured as a direct result of dance music
the reason for non independents getting dominating the
charts are cos of money and types of acts - independents
often act as an alternative to alot of pop stuff - they have
also got better distribution an d deals with major shops etc
- they pay for it through pr and deals with stores and
radio etc

warp are hardly corporate whore - they're just a succesful
independent record label owned by enthusiasts.
by it's nature an independent can't become a corporate
conglomerate as it has to be part of a conglomerate - whiuch
is a large group of companies - so your diatribe is pretty
bloody empty again - i'd give it up if I were you

expansion

of course crap like oakenfold was closer toward the top 10

I remember seeing Windowlicker on TOTP, they didn't play it
but it had a little bit of the video on as they counted up
the top 20. My friend called into the local radio station
trying to win some competition or something and when the DJ
asked what track he would like on he chose Windowlicker. The
DJ just said something like 'I'll see what I can do' and
didn't play it.

i remember the video for "On" being played on the chart show
(remember that?! ) in 1993. 1st thing i got to see & hear by
mr. aphex. and it was all uphill from there.... :)

heh. point well taken. diversifying the status quo in
entertainment (be it music, film or otherwise) would indeed
likely result in social change - the 60s are a prime example
of this - but it's not something that the establishment
would easily permit, because it would mean a dissolution of
their power structure.

didn't the criminal justice act actually become law? the
poor raver kids in the states have to put up with much the
same now, what with the anti-rave bill having been passed by
congress (formerly known as the RAVE act - as in Reducing
Americans' Vulnerability To Ecstacy - how about Reducing
Americans' Vulnerability To Righ Wing Political Bullshit
and/or Reducing Americans' Vulnerability to George Dubya
Bush?!? sounds like a bill needing urgent approval by the US
congress to me!

american politicos are truly skilled in finding imaginary
social ills so as to divert the attention of the masses from
the real problems plaguing their society - poverty, racism,
vast economic desparities between the rich and the poor, a
shit system of welfare & healthcare, illiteracy, etc.

But they don't have a good choice and only tune into the
charts. When I was young and first listening to the charts
the most diverse thing I could find was Rednex and Minty
(That's nice). Maybe a record label needs to make a BBC
children's program about a house full of techno musicians
smoking joints and putting dangerous things in the microwave
for kicks. It would be much better then S Club 7 (Six minus
the chubby ugly one that their new label didn't want).

so far as i can see the only reason come to daddy and
windowlicker sold so well (comparitavely) is the play they

as for my "bloody empty diatribe", it takes some knowledge
of musical history to prove otherwise. virtually all of the
record labels which now constitute the BIG 5 started out as
independed companies much like warp. virgin records is a
perfect example of this. it was only once they began to
make mass amounts of money on the things they were putting
out that their artistic and creative integrity went out the
window.
i didn't say that warp is a corporate whore of a company -
at this point they are a hugely successful independent label
- but that is not to say that at some point in time, it all
won't turn into the next EMI or Polygram - here's hoping it
won't happen, but who knows?

but seriously ... i'm just responding to a statement made in
response to my earlier argument (which someone called a
"bloody empty diatribe" - might make a good song title, now
that i think of it - i actually use stuff like that as
tracktitles, mind! i have a track called 'why are you taking

my attempt to take away the cake he was gorging himself on
