I had a disagreement with marlowe today about liking artists who are quite dickheads.
I'd really like some opinions on this, because I'm quite curious if there are a lot of people who have marlowe's point of view on this.
Black-Hole Smile says: are you calling hail to the thief a masterpiece? Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: yes Black-Hole Smile says: oh dear oh dear Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: hehe, we all have our opinions mister Black-Hole Smile says: yes, but still Black-Hole Smile says: it's RADIOHEAD! Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: sit down stand up is one of the best songs I've ever heard Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: radiohead is probabaly my favorite band of all time Black-Hole Smile says: god, you're kidding, right? Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: no I'm seriously not Black-Hole Smile says: I think I feel woozy Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: why do you hate radiohead? Black-Hole Smile says: they're pretentious motherfuckers up their own arses Black-Hole Smile says: they think they're special Black-Hole Smile says: I don'T LIKe people who think that they're special Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: well, I'm not a big fan of them as persons just like I'm not abig fan of Richard in person etc. it's the music that I really really like
Black-Hole Smile says: well the personalities make the music homeboys Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: I don't agree Black-Hole Smile says: so you're saying the people don't make the music? Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: no, of course not. I'm just saying that their attitudes don't reflect onto their music
Black-Hole Smile says: their personalities, dear nexus Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: hm, I know what you mean Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: but it just doesn't wotk that way for me. I hate they way E

Eminem acts, but his (early) lyrics are very good imo Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: -y Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: I'm talking mostley about attitude here Black-Hole Smile says: oh well Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: because I don't really know how the personalities of the radiohead members are
Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: I'm not appreciating Tom Yorke as a person, but I do appreciate him as a musician and a songwriter
Black-Hole Smile says: oh well - different strokes for different folks Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: indeed Black-Hole Smile says: I just didn't think you'd fall for it Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: I mean maybe it's just my age and the fact that I'm not english
Black-Hole Smile says: maybe Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: I know what you mean with them being pretentious dickheads but I don't find that back in their music
Black-Hole Smile says: personally, I think that person and creation are intrinsically linked, but maybe that's just me
Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: hm, If you think about it in a logical way that does make sense. But irl it's different (at least for me)
There are quite a few artists who I dislike when I see them on tv doing an interview or whatever, but I still enjoy their music.
Black-Hole Smile says: really? Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: yes Black-Hole Smile says: I can't enjoy music if I know thecreatore was a dick Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: it's hard to explain because I know exactly what you mean Black-Hole Smile says: for instance, I rarely listen to AFX any more Black-Hole Smile says: I don't get the same enjoyment any more knowing he sold out Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: as long as an artist touches me with what he/she's doing I have to give in
Black-Hole Smile says: even if you know you're

even if you know you're being tricked into think they're sincere?
Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: well Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: I can say to myself... AFX is a dickhead, he's only out for my money bla bla, but if he brings out something new and I really like it I can't ignore him
Black-Hole Smile says: be strong! Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: no, if he manages to create music that really does something to me than I won't let his personality stand in the way
Black-Hole Smile says: be strong nexus Black-Hole Smile says: fight satan! Hail to the Thief is alweer n meesterwerk.. says: if an artist has a talent, and the talent does it for me, it's not the person that counts.
Black-Hole Smile says: fight these satanic forces nexus!
sorry if this is too long, I didn't expect it to be this long :s

In response to the original post, it'd lessen the way I feel about some music for me if I knew the artist was taking the piss.
I think this is a different matter to whether or not I like the person or agree with their point of view etc. I may think someone is a commie buffoon (Matt Black of Coldcut), but that doesn't stop me appreciating their music as I know that that is heartfelt and sincere.

I partly disagree with Black Hole Smile (is that like smiling with our asshole? ;) j/k), if I knew the artist is a fuckwit it'd probably, as Ceri said, lessen the the way I feel about his/her/their music, but I wouldn't stop listening to the music.

I kind of agree with Nexus on this one.
What if you liked a certain song, and then later found out the creator of that song was a real asshole... would that really make you like the music less? The song is still the same... it shouldn't have to matter.

It's a tough one really. I mean, like my Funk soul brother just said, there would be limits on just what kind of person was getting my money. He would have to be a big-time prick for me to not buy the music, I'd probably just download it all then.
As for Radiohead being pretentious, fuck off... Give me a shining example of them ever being pretentious, be it through music (some of the best in the world) or interview. Thom does sound like a bit of an eccentric, but does that really qualify him for 'dickhead' status? No!

i don't agree with black hole smile. personalities don't matter. it's the music. it's the fact that the core industry, the Top 40 industry worries about an artist's personality rather than the quality of their music, that is the reason we don't have any fucking good music on the radio anymore... at least here in the States. I'm quite sure your radio programming is of much higher quality in Europe.
And yes, my typing is shitty right now. I know.
Who cares if Radiohead isn't the nicest band in the world? I'll listen to their music regardless.
However, dickheads like Metallica who believe that one fratboy who burns one of their cds is instantly going to start a chain reaction and magically make Metallica broke -- people like that are the ones who write crap music.
But in the end, to me, all that matters is the music.

Aaah Tibbar, yet another Pet Sounds lover. I think that is one of the most beautiful records ever made...
but that aside, Radiohead are amazing. Who cares if the artist is a moron...I mean, you don't have to live with them...all you need to do is listen to their music, and well, if their music is good, I couldn't care less if the artist is a pig with 5 legs and 3 neurons for a brain.
And Radiohead's music IS amazing. IMHO, though.

Oh God yes, Pet Sounds is the greatest album ever made, even better than The Beatles. I don't think a day has gone by in the past few years that I haven't listened to at LEAST a track from it.
The 4 disc box-sext is amazing too, the vocal-less backing tracks are so nuanced and well constructed, but not over produced or schmaltzy or anything... so gorgeous.

jesus, nexus - you could have warned me you were going to post it here -- I wasn't even concentrating full on the conversation, so I threw out stock responses at times! But still, yes, the character of a musician to me is important, I stand by that. If I know that the creator is an ignorant prick, then that detracts from the music to me. But, that's MY feeling. I know people disagree with me about things like these, and things like advertising.

some of my fav artists are supposedly SUPER NICE, some are known snobs and assholes. the latter i just make a point not to be interested in them as people; the former i can consider them as people when i listen to their music cos who they are has a positive impact on how much i appreciate their music. since the latter group would have a negative impact i try to discount it (eg: aphex twin, if i listened to his music and thought about him as a person the music would probably be ruined for me).

just to clarify a couple things: 1) most if not all membes of radiohead really are quite nice people who love and respect their fans and take their music seriously. i think most people who hate the band do it either cos they don't like the music or cos they want to be different (ie: not one of the radiohead-loving "sheep" cos heaven forbid you like what's popular).
2) richard's remix album title is obviously very self-aware and tongue-in-cheek. i mean how st00pid iz you to not get that? if this collection was a "sell out" then so was classics and CW compilation (mostly or entirely previously released music you would have a hard time tracking down if not for that collection).

I'm not saying 26 remixes is a sell-out, I like the idea of a remix album where you can hardly hear the actual songs. I can smell the irony from a mile. He's just taking this remix thing too far. He should release something fresh. Something completely by him. Why 3 remix-releases in a row?

remixes are an important part of electronica and aphex twin. considering he only did one remix of the bug and the other 2 tracks on smojphace are noise tracks (NOT remixes) i don't see what the big deal is.
