Maybe a dull topic for a saturday afternoon but who cares
:)
Tonight there will be congress elections here in Iceland.
The fight between the right and left wing is increadibly
tense at the moment but according to a poll published today
the conservatives will hold a very slim majority 50,4-49,6%.
The right-wing "IndependantParty" have been in control here
in Iceland for 12 years and its about bloody time they loose
their control over this country. Im a left wing activist so
I will be keeping my fingers crossed for this regime to
collapse. The current government e.g. very openly supported
the attacks on Iraq (something I will never forgive them)
only because they didnt want to miss the US military air
base thats close to Keflavik airport. Iceland has never
participated in any war so its a disgrace the government
supported it despite 90% of the people here were against
it.
Another terrible thing the government here has done
is allowing the aluminium company Alcoa to plant a giant
factory right on the east coast that totally will destroy a
large untouched and beautiful mountain area. The government
needed the factory to cover up for the failures that were
surfacing in the terribly managed welfare system.

Financially though Iceland has been doing kinda well in the
last years but poverty is widely increasing and the gap
between rich and poor is growing larger day by day. After
the financial market here was opened up the government did
nothing to stop the newly rich yuppies from playing with
company stocks so a very small group of buisness men got a
complete control over the markets and played around with it
like toys :(
All heavenly praise and thanks to the wonderful
Capitalism.........Iceland is right now turning into a small
version of the mafia run Russia :(
Also the fishing system that produces a very large% of
Iceland´s income has come under the scrutiny of servising
only the biggest fish companies so the their executives have
been able to sell their fishing rights and thereby taking
they mone

i hope the people you voted for win!

what is the population in iceland? (how many inhabitants)

and "gap between rich and poor is growing larger day by day"
sounds very familliar-same thing happening here...

(luckly we dont have the russians invading yet)

the money and power away from the small villages out in the
country. Its possible here to inherit fishing rights and
sell them for as much as 50 million $$$ and there are many
examples of teenagers selling their rights for such a sum
and then they´re of to Ibiza chilling with loads of money!!
Meanwhile the villages loose their right to fish and a lot
of ghost towns sadly have emerged.

So now its essential a left-wing goverment is elected to put
an end to this fucking madness!! Lets pray for that together
:)

there are 280.000 of us here inhabiting this island. We got
independence from Denmark 1944.
The british army invaded here in WW2 but the bloody american
took over after the war in 1949 and have sadly been here
with an air base ever since:(
The prime minister here e.g. said in a recent interwiew
George Bush jr was an extremely smart and gifted individual
:=) so he will probably defend every stupid military action
Bush takes.
The same M.P. also says there is absolutely no
poverty in Iceland, and when confronted with the question
why there was such an increase in people looking for help
from the Red Cross Charity he told "people will always line
up for things that dont cost anything, its human nature"
!!!
So you can hopefully understand now why I hate that arrogant
idiotic P.M. of ours :(

Þetta er líklega sú umræða sem ég bjóst síst við
að sjá hérna :).

Well the thing is that those friggin' bastards will win
again, I think there's no question about it. People say that
they will guarantee stability, that's just crap. The rich
getting richer and the poor getting poorer situation will
probably continue.
