it's a broad and misued term - industrial records ws a label
owned by throbbing gristle - but in the genre i''d recommend
throbbing gristlw whitehouse and coil

like in 'Only Heaven' or 'Second Nature'... it's really

cheers,i agree with astrid-gil-botn,it is a misused term but
when i was really into it all of it was industrial to me.in
the end it was my two loves.......guitars and drum
machines, but it lead me onto idm, techno or whatever bollocks
you want to call it.merzbow is one asami akita from japan
who just makes pure fucking white noise(he has a ridiculous
back catalogue).big black is steve albini(our lord),santiago
durango, dave riley and a roland drum machine called .....you
guessed it.....roland.they released some truly amazing
albums, namely atomizer & songs about fucking and a shit load
of eps.from chicago in the mid to late eighties, they
were/are gods, but a lot of people tie them into hardcore
punk.check em out, still available on touch & go records.

there sure are a lot of deutsche industrial artists

Funkstörung are essentially a fusion of hip hop and
industrial. Ae fans are likely to enjoy them.

Just trying to add some stuff, snakejuice recommended a lot
of good bands, but here are some I'd definitly recommend out
of those... especially if you are moving from electronica to
industrial, you'll like these

Frontline Assembly: If you want remixed stuff, the Re-wind
album is good, otherwise, the newer you get, the more
electronic influences. They are amazing. Seriously.

Equinox: A frontline assembly pseudo which does industrial
drum and bass. It's not well mastered (the album Holon) but
it has some neat things going on

Wumpscut: Some of the best industrial stuff out there, I
like Blutchild and Wreath of Barbs personally. Typical
gothic/indo vocals over some minimalist hardcore tracks

Velvet Acid Christ: Like Wumpscut, slightly different style,
less hardcore. Good use of samples in some tracks, hit or
miss with most of their tracks (IMO) but definitly worth
checking out

Apop. Berzerk: Some seriously classic industrial tracks...
Kathy's Song, etc.

And one of my favorites... which I'd imagine Snake knew, but
if not, good stuff

VNV Nation: Goes between psytrance and industrial, great
vocals, and starting to experiment with the newer stuff.
Good production quality, catching beats for the most part.
Recommend Empires.

and i see we have alot of people who like style over
substance here...

stick to the old school industrial, or you're liable to end
up all marilyn manson-y

offline Sanguine from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-05-08 02:28 [#00689007]

It's a transition... I could never have liked any of the
real oldschool industrial if I hadn't padded my transition
with some EBM/Electro-indo stuff in the first place.

And hey, what's so bad about Marilyn? He's what Michael
Jackson would have become if he had done a few quarts more
estrogen... the man has an urban legend about taking out a
rib to pleasure himself. Pure, unbridled can't create that
kind of publicity. I wouldn't mind having a following like
that if it sold records

That being said, I agree with ya Tibbar, sarcasm doesn't
come out well in text, and I'm in a weird mood (READ: half
drunk), I thought the Manson comment was funny, so I post. I
still think it's good to transition, and industrial isn't
half as good on records as it is in a good german club, ya
know?

erm, i think we see things quite a bit differently.

tact is something ALOT of industrial acts lack, in generous
quantities. and i think industrial is QUITE a headphone sort
of music, when done right (RE: einstruzende's 90's stuff,
skinny puppy's later albums, foetus [in his many
incarnations], and so on...)

i only approached idm/clitch/whatever you wanna call it
THROUGH industrial... it is what i was weened on. i don't
buy music for a cult of personality... in fact, it REALLY
turns me off to something to see someone flossing their crap
up on stage like they are better than everyone else. i enjoy
art i can relate to. if i REALLY was into it, i could become
some sort of crappy cultural icon just like BRIAN WARNER
has, but i actually WANT my message and my music to be
heard, and NOT have kids running out trying to be just like
me in respect to hair, clothes, etc...

does someone like nivek ogre have natural charisma? yes.
it's a gift he has, it's not something he is TRYING hard to
do. he puts his all into his art, and that is a great
quality to possess. but he isn't some hot topic facist
either. people like marilyn and his followers are just as
much a puppet of the system as the britney spears kids.

clitch = glitch

offline Sanguine from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-05-08 03:50 [#00689056]

Haha... totally... like I said, sarcasm is hard to convey in
text. That's exactly what Manson is. If I wanted to be
entertained in an industrial fashion, at least Gwar knows
they're doing it for the entertainment value and don't try
and pawn it off as good music to boot.

I never felt quite the same listening to industrial with
headphones... it's like I was missing out on the energy. I
think it's a whole different experience when you can feel
the music pump through your body.

Same with Kid606. When I saw him live, I was blown away. His
CDs don't half do him justice... it was just plain high
energy the entire time.

Industrial, for me, is as much for the atmosphere of going
to a gritty worn down club and moshing as it is for the
music. Some of it's good, some of it's horrible. But it's a
matter of seeing WHY things are bad, the reason they're
popular, to really appreciate the good stuff.

When it's done right, definitly. Hence the bands I suggested
for listening to... since I went the opposite direction,
glitch/IDM to industrial.

I'd love to hear some good "substance" industrial tracks
recommended, I think Wumpscut and FLA do that very well, as
the later skinny puppy albums. I'm not extremely well versed
in the genre, so still looking for suggestions myself.

out of that genre for 10 years :p

Like tibbar said, stick to the good old stuff. Start with
Skinny Puppy and Ministry.

But seriously, Tibbar's right. Most of what gets called
Industrial is pretty disposable. Your best bet is to work
through the classics first:

Non, Throbbing Gristle and all offshoots (Coil, Phychic
TV,...), Einstürzende Neubauten, SPK, Skiny Puppy (and
offshoots), Merzbow, Whitehouse, Nurse With Wound, and so
on.

A lot of old goth rock might appeal to you as well. Bauhaus
is good stuff.
