my latest school essay.. i decided to write about something
i love, today's electronic music. it's a 22 pager with
bibliography and an appendix of an email Q&A i got to do
with mark bell (aka LFO, aka the guy who produced
homogenic and other cd's you probably or at least
should own). got an A on it :)

very, very musical, so if you don't know musicological terms
it might bore you. it was for my History of Music class.
puts into historical and theoretical terms a lot of this IDM
stuff.

i used the following artists for detailed musical analysis:

aphex twin
jega
telefon tel aviv
autechre
amon tobin

i also discussed influences like kraftwerk, derrick mays,
edgar varese, and milton babbitt.

a long read but you may enjoy it if you like scholarly
papers or just really love reading about your favorite
music.

i may do a radio show (possibly pirate radio since the radio
station seems mad at me...?) later this week. i'll keep you
updated.

why are the radio station pissed at you ?
Shall i come over and kick their asses ?

I will read your paper later and give you my critisizzle
(can't be arsed right now).
How good is a "A" ? , im not familiar with the american
grading system.

radio station student manager (a senior named nikki... total
whorebag, she wears so much makeup she looks like a clown in
a leather mini-skirt) is mad at me cos i spoke out against
the preferential treatment she and some of her staff members
give certain dj's... i'm not among those in favor with them
cos we're not friends and they think i'm weird for my
musical tastes and maybe other stuff like how i look or
talk?

an A is the highest you can get in college... A+ is never
given out, maybe twice in 5 years.

let me know if these papers work, jand had a hard time.. he
says he downloaded it and it appeared as jibberish

That was interesting. I now have a heap more understanding
than i previously did about the electronic industry and more
so "IDM". Nice work.

I had no problem downing your papers , looking forward to
reading it later =)

So is anyone at your college listening to your shows or is
it only we your dedicated xltronic fans listening ?

That old Jazz Cat that comes in after your show how does he
fit in the picture ?
Isn't he a bit old for a college radio station ? (mind you i
have very little knowledge about how college radio actualy
works)

hhhah sido you're too funny......it's BEER time right
now....muahahhaha....fo shizzle

that 'old geezer' that comes on after travis is a local guy
(as far as i know he's not in college=o) and he doesn't have
anything to do with the WACKS that run the station, they are
fellow students who play favourites.

tis a sad reality (as far as US Radio stations go,
especially college radio stations) that if you don't play
Top 40 songs and the like, that your music tastes are
considered OUT there. i mean they NEVER play Aphex on the
radio, much less AE, []pusher, etc.... i dunno how many
radio station DJ's who may even know who he is?

i think europeans have an edge cos it seems there's more
variety in the music thats played out there.......right?

Here in sweden the best music is played on the goverment
owned radio.
You get specialised shows on differnet music genres like
reagy , rock , pop electronic etc...plus live concerts
(aphex for example =).
Then there is all the comercial stations that seems to have
the same mongoloid playlist repeating every hour mixed with
mindless blah blah blah and stupid comersials.
The underground stations are often on a crappy frequense and
you kinda have to stand on a mountain with a 20 ton reciever
to get a proper signal hehe.

bump for those interested in a detailed disseration on IDM
(influences, history, qualities)

although it uses a lot of musical terminology it's all
explained... you can be a novice at music and it should make
some sense to you

i mentioned the MB in the paper too :)

Nice, I dig it!

''The term “IDM” was coined not by the creators of the
music but by its listeners.''

And we are such fools.

''This can be observed on many Internet forums such as
Xltronic.com, where members of its message board regularly
exchange ideas and mp3’s of their music for remixes and
compilations.''

Rock over London, rock on Chicago.

Exactly. All of the late 80s, early 90s "electronica" owes
to Detroit and Chicago for inspiration...

thank you jivverdicker :) the responses have all been very
good so far. one guy is telling me to send it to journals
but i don't think that'd work. it's too general for the
speciality journals and too specific for the general (music)
journals. i'm just happy people have been enjoying it and
i'll keep these on my site until i see someone claim it as
their own writing.

for anyone who downloaded other papers on the site, i
haven't read those other ones (except for steve reich) since
the month i wrote them. so if you wanna discuss it i'll have
to reread them cos i don't know if i still agree with the
ideas i wrote.

they didn't get the link from here....I don't know where

Great stuff, tits....as I mentioned in my mail, you sure can
write; wish I had half your skills with English....

BTW I can turn these into .PDF files for you if you
want...that would make them easier to view for people than
the current Word format...

let me know....(got rest of week off for dental torture so
will be catching up with loads.....)...

thank you again :)

marlowe, i need to reread those capitalism essays. i haven't
read them in 12 months, i might not agree with everything i
said in them. i remember being pleased with them so i posted
them, but to be honest, had i read them first they might not
be online.

bob mcbob, you should read what i said about "bine." it took
me months to understand that track; actually it wasn't until
i started reading about milton babbitt, the twelve-tone
scale, and atonality that it started to make sense to me. so
if you want to get a better grasp on it you should give that
section at least a read.

The only flaw I could find was ''coined'' being used twice
in consecutive sentences. You're not getting the A+ you
deserve from this grammar nut until it's fixed. It just...
weirded me out!

yea, that was one sloppy part, usually i'm pretty good with
the vocab so i was surprised i missed it.. but fuck it i'm
keeping it

were people here able to make sense out of the sections on
the 12 tone scale, atonality, minimalism, etc.? did you
agree with my associating those concepts with electronica?
discuss.

Very good essay.

Much better than my college essays... I guess "the rampant
use of stimulants and hallucinogens like mushrooms and
Ecstacy" might have had something to do with that...
