Then go on kazaa and download a cracked version. The people that crack them believe in the try before you buy philosophy, even if a number of people don't ever buy it.

Hmmm. I just checked. Click on software search, then type "halion". Type "VST" if you want to check out other stuff. I came up with four different files. There are two which are version 1.0 which means you can't play .gig files (the one I downloaded).
I would probably go the one that's by Zone, because I trust their output, but it only has one user so it could take a while.
P.S. Not everything you see there is actually what it says it is. I've wanted to try out Steinberg's Virtual Guitarist, but every one I downloaded was fake. Hmmmm.

By the way. I've downloaded both Halion and Kontact, and I personally prefer Halion.
Even though you can't play it standalone, it's not nearly as powerful and versatile, and apparently has a filter that lacks "warmth", Halion doesn't hog up nearly as much CPU power, and it doesn't take a few minutes (no exaggeration) to load a previous song if you've tweaked the samples.
Halion is a nice, very easy to use, very easy to program and tweak, and undemanding on the CPU. When I get my act together it's the program I will buy (honestly, I'm not a thief, I swear!)

i need to get halion. Am i right in thinking it is basically a software sampler. Am i also right in thinking it basically helps you make your own VST instruments set up?
ps i also tried to download cubase sx from kazaa, but only one version works, and it works very badly. Think i might have to fork for it

If it comes from Zone, then it should work. y copy of Cubase SX has the problem of crashing when I want to time stretch, but other than that, it works fine.
It IS a software sampler. The only other sampler I have is an Ensoniq Mirage, which is a completely different kettle of fish.
My favourite uses for it are usually getting samples from the internet, usually a file containing a classic synth, like the Moog, played in one note with different settings. I then loop the sound, which takes a bit of getting used to, then map it over the keyboard, then play around with the filters.
If you have Kontakt you can time stretch the notes, just by pressing a button, so that all the notes come out in the same length. This is handy, but not particularily important, at least to my ears.
And it doesn't help at all when sampling vocals, ie. they still sound like chipmunks when they're raised a tome or more.

i get broadband in 2 months. Then i'll download until im content. Im gonna just buy cubase sx, its the most important piece of software i'll use, so i might as well make sure i get the real thing. The version i got to work had loads of functions missing, and just crashed like all the time, and it sent my poor soundcard mad. Managed to record some of the mad crackles it made though. muhuhahaha

If you can't find it on Kazaa, you were not supposed to get it. It just wasn't meant to be. You + Halion = not true. If Halion was a disease that killed everyone on earth, you would survive. You get the point (and that's also all you get).
