what's beef?

Beef is not what Jay said to Nas
Beef is when working niggas can't get jobs
Instead trying to find niggas to rob,
Trying to find bigger guns so they can finish the job.
Beef is when the crack kids can't find moms
Cuz they in a pine box or locked behind bars.
Beef ain't the summer jam for Hot 9-7
Beef is the cocaine and AIDS epidemic.
Beef don't come with a radio edit.
Beef is when the judge is calling you defendant
Beef, it come with a long jail sentence.
Handed down to you in a few short minutes.
Beef is when your girl come through for a visit,
talk about, "I'm pregnant" by some other nigga.
Beef is high blood-pressure and bad credit
Need a loan for your home but too broke to get it.
And all your little kids is doin is getting bigger
Trying not raise them around these wild niggas.
Beef is when a gold nigga got ya seat,
and a manicured hand out like, "Pay me nigga"
Or I'm telling your wife or starting up some foul rumor
that'll ruin your life
Beef is when the gangsta ain't doing it right
and anotha gangsta decided what to do with his life.
Beef is not what these famous niggas do on a mic.
Beef is what George Bush would do in a fight.
Beef is not what Ja said to Fifty
Beef is world to herb, not being here with me.
When a soldier ends his life with his own gun,
Beef is trying to figure out what to tell to his son.
Beef is oil prices and geo-politics.
Beef is Iraq, The West Bank, and Gaza Strip.
Some beef is big and some beef is small,
But what you call beef is not beef at all.
Beef is real like, happening every day.
And it's realer than them songs that gave to Kay Slay.
This has been a Blackstar P.S.A
From Mos Def, Pretty Flaco, Black Dante, and the Blackstar
Embassy, B-to-the-K.

And after twenty tries at defining beef, he still didn't get
it right. It's the flesh of a slaughtered full-grown steer,
bull, ox, or cow... What he lacks in an ability to define
beef, he more than makes up for with eloquent use of
ebonics.

the italian job

mos def is a good actor but he's been in some bad movies...
showtime comes to mind.. i enjoy his movies (and his
broadway stint in the 2-man play topdog/underdog was
critically acclaimed last summer) but i wish he'd
concentrate on albums

I like the rap voice of the guy in funkstorung's "appetite"
album, both of the male voice tracks are thuper
thexy
:
"wipe my ass with mc lyric

sheets

you got bullets? I got grenade launcher rhymes per week" (I
don't know the actual words)

And though, being extremely homosexual, I don't find the
female lyrics sexy, I still think they're wonderful.

"Beef is when a gold nigga got ya seat,
and a..." = Beef is when a gold digga got your seed in
her...

and it's realer than the songs you gave to Kay-Slay.. I love
that line

if they dont like that..show these kids 'may-december'
titsworth

I went to the closing night of topdog/underdog.. mos def
cried after a short speech at the end.. I met harvey keitel
there .. and one person sitting about 10 seats to the right
of me was rumored to be david letterman

did you see that play? I'd say it deserved the pulitzer it
won.. I like the other stuff that playwright (that went to
the same school as my sister) has done.. at one intermission
point, the end of "careful (click, click)" played.. nice
touch

listening now... nice, very nice. I can tell this is the
start of another hip-hop binge for me. Hopefully I don't OD
again though!

theo:

"Beef is when a gold nigga got ya seat, and a..." = Beef
is when a gold digga got your seed in her...

thanks for catching that... i tried to make it easy on
myself by finding the lyrics and just pasting, but i ended
up having to fix like 12 lines myself. i missed that one.
this one still makes no sense to me: Beef is world to
herb, not being here with me.

the kay slay line is particularly funny cos these lyrics
were debuted in a freestlye on kay slay's show (along w/
monch and skillz)

i wish i coulda gone to the mos def broadway play but
broadway tix are expensive and hard to find as it is, plus i
live in DC not NYC

the black star & q-tip song with weldon irvine came from
some tribute to weldon irvine compilation (i think)

i'll upload the "respiration" remix to the same URL in a
moment (check it in about 5 minutes)

with me"

his upcoming rock album?

I dont know. as far as the hiphop album is concerned, it
seems he's done a fair share of pandering to mainstream
tastes.. but I dont think that'll threaten the integrity
that would accompany the production of another album in his
name

as far as blackjack johnson is concerned.. a friend saw them
at penn state and had nothing good to report (there may be a
frame-of-reference issue there though) and I saw them on
hbo's reverb (the other act was kweli) and although they
have a nice lineup, I wasnt too impressed with most of the
material.. I dont know though.. considering the people in
the band u'd have to trust that their output would be worthy
of multiple listens/possible purchase.. I dont know if we'll
ever see this though? esp. if it's in the rawkus waiting
room .. that label wouldnt take a chance with something like
this - consider their attempts to rise up from the
underground - and they just dont have their shit together..
when was the last time there even was a rawkus
release??

I remember when they used to take chances and were more
progressive (do u remember the rawkuts drum'nbass spinoff
label they had?).. it seems everyone .. once they see 5-6
digits opt for conforming and regressing rather than
progress.. which leaves the artists in a tricky situation
because they have to produce sub-par, out-of-their-element
pandering material... that's what happens when rupert
murdoch's son starts a record label though.

mos has worked with a lot more mainstream producers and
artists since BOBS came out, for sure...

but after hearing kanye west's tracks on talib's album i'm
not worried at all about him ruining mos def, pharoahe
monch, or dead prez... it turns out the first beat kanye
ever sold was to not jay-z but dead prez, so that says
something about how kanye isn't just some commercial clown

mos' next hip-hop album will be a lot more diverse than his
first one judging by some of his appearences... it may be
more accessible in general but when i hear new songs like
"close to the edge" and "what's beef" it doesn't strike me
that mos could release a commercial album or a bunch of
songs pandering to the mainstream

i saw BJJ in DC january 2002 and they were awesome.. i think
they were hesitant to play anything they'd written together
cos they knew their album won't come out for a couple years
and didn't want to contribute to their own bootlegging.
"ghetto" ("for my people") is my fav BJJ original.

rawkus sold the rights to BJJ to MCA so this should be
coming out late this year for real... MCA haven't messed up
yet with hip-hop in my opinion. (last rawkus/MCA release was
quality)

i don't remember any dnb on rawkus except for some "simon
says" remixes

that kanye west is a oft-hired producer (actually employed
by rocafella .. like ol'dirty bastard is now [btw..?!?!?])
is a great thing. the same goes for timbaland and the
neptunes.. they're sound is (was once.. some of their
contributions have worn quite thin .. for obvious reasons)
innovative, timbaland revolutionized popular music as a
whole I'd say.. much of that might have to do with the
mid-to-late-90s electronica/dnb wave influence actually..
it's bizarre to me to find musicians that I actually LIKE
being used at every opportunity by the mainstream .. all
this came after the swizz beats/dame grease/ruff ryder craze
of course.. which still amazes me.. who/how did anyone think
that shit was good!?!? so seeing kanye west, timbaland and
neptunes in the mainstream is quite a paradox for me.. I
love it.. but I'm just not used to what I like .. as well as
even remote creativity being exhibited.. being in the
mainstream and used by anyone who's anybody. that's also the
one downside.. timberlake and miss aguilera can get these
'it' producers (kanye excluded of course) to work with them
now.. as their holding down that x-variable position for the
time being..

but yeah.. I like kanye west hahaa

I'm thinking about getting that kweli album.. I saw a really
good video for the new single.. and I've liked the other
tracks I've heard.. tell me ayatollah is a producer on it as
well and I'm buying it ;)

ayatollah produced "joy" and "the proud" (my fav song on the
album i think). i think kweli can express himself more as an
emcee w/o hi-tek... different producers allow different
styles, ranges...
