to start a label would take something around 3k in USD. do
the math from there. thats for pressing, mastering, promo.
the works.

a friend and i have started a small label, 'white noise',
and are going to press our first 12" next week. 300 copies
for 600¤ i think it was,, with centerlabels and sleeves.

3k???????????§!!!!!!!!

fukinell

i thought it was a about 3-400quid for a pressing of a
couple of 100 12's.

we're looking to do a 3 track 12'.
all our own artwork.

cant i turn up at a press plant with say a DAT or CD master
then ask for 100 copies??

300 euro for 600 sounds more reasonable.

thats just for pressing, you asked to start a label. you
need money to promote that stuff. adverts, websites, sending
out promos.

you want to press only a few hundred but some labels send
out a few hundred promos alone. thats before they sell
anything.

starting a real label takes some money.

phiz : thank you! we wanna keep it minimalistic.

ofcourse if you're main object is to take over the world
it's gonna cost you loads of money. we for example are
taking it easy.. we're also doing this for fun..

cant i just go somewhere though and register a name as a
sole label, i control distribution, promotion, all that
shit.

but what i mean is, can i just create a label from nothing??
if i have the product in my hand, can i create a label with
no capital to legally distribute it?

i mean i 'm not arsed about legallity, this is a product
created by the unit to be distributed non profit, do i even
have to have a label???? can i just print the 12's then give
them away???

Don't think its the cost of starting up which is a problem.
Your basic cost £200 seems fudge all. Its gotta be surely,
what are the chances of selling any records at all which is
key?

ofcourse you can, but as a private person you pay more ..

Selling the records thats the hard part. Especially in this
new environment of mp3 and file sharing etc. In fact its
gotta be a bitch. Potentially on that cost basis you've only
gotta sell say 50 records. Mmm thats seems fudge all but I
bet even that is hard.

what we're doing is putting our money up with the
expectation of losing it all.
its just an exsposure thing really.

i dont think there is no business plan to it really.
would we run into difficulty though with this procedure???

would giving it away create more problems than selling it i
mean??

i dunno, big ocean we're starting to paddle in i think.

i think quality plays a big part in whether it steps from
the realm of mp3 to actual plastic in hand.

im not trying to come off like i know everything but i work
for a label, so i kinda do know a little bit.

it can be done on a budget but not for 3-400 dollars. youll
need at least 500 dollars to press the records and might be
able to master them with that. the fewer records you press
the more expensive it is. these places are designed to sell
in bulk.

good luck.

How many records do new labels sell?

I mean how many does say Planet Mu sell? I think they're
doing well if they do 500.

i was told by a few people that getting records pressed was
going to cost crazy ridiculous amounts of money, and was
told this a couple of times. I just sort of put it off as a
future plan, but it's really that low priced, I should make
it my goal to have a record pressed, as I think the
mastering I can do myself....

sorry Portland, its just that process you described scared
ther shit out of me. I thought i'd be able to turn up with
a DAT or other master and be able to press from that, seems
like alot of shit to go through first

phiz,

Are you planning on selling any records or does it not
matter? :-)

doesn't sound that outrageous..?

sounds more like basic stuff that needs to be done just to
even make a record.

I agree with Promo though - it'll be shit-hard to sell the
stuff.

however, I think Mu probably presses 1000 copies of a record
- criminal 02 was 2000 copies alone.

doesnt matter, looking on sending them to anybody who we
think'd be interested.:)

music is what we'd like to do for the rest of our lives so
it makes ense to live from it, but we know the star will be
throwing away money

I think if you're gonna make a record, then when you put
it out you have to really have the intention of really
trying to sell the mother at all costs. Otherwise no
offence, it just becomes an exercise in vanity publishing.
That said I'm sure your music Phiz is pretty ace, otherwise
you wouldn't have the confidence to put a record out.

confidence is the key i think.

we KNOW!!! other people will enjoy our music.

Its just getting that confidence to project back to us.

Music is a wierd force.
Its one of the essential elements i think and when you
create it you've got to have some control over it, even
though it is a force unto itself

I must say you hear about Mike loosing money at Planet Mu.
At that cost basis I can't see why, it just seems crazy.

like what you said in the other thread promo, a love of
music before thinking about profit.
thats why Mike P and other people do it.
