perth used to be my nickname for a chamber hidden deep in my
intestines.

of analogue bubblebath vol.1 on 12" just sitting there at
DaDa's, i dont know how much longer it will be there for

down there tomorrow and snatch it before someone else does

yeah the wami (west australian music industry i think) gigs
are happening all over the place.. not too many good
electronic acts though.. its mainly indiepop/indierock
bands../i think most of perth's electronic artists are still
in their bedrooms not getting popular..

we've (me and od) played some gigs with the local 8-bit
recordings crew, but we dont really fit in with their
style.., they tend to be more hardcore/gabba/noise stuff
which i am developing a strong disliking of.. but soon i'm
hopefully gonna get organising some gigs with me, od,
rockenjohnny (in his duo gate) and some others.. if we can
find some.. and we'll try and get more than 10 people to
come hehe

well i was just saying that i haven't found any noise/gabba
stuff that i've liked .. occasionally i'll like some of the
stuff i hear from the 8-bit crew, but i hate all the noise
stuff i hear.. just my tastes i guess../

yeah most of the shows i've played have been with hardcore
techno stuff, usually stompin kinda stuff so it isn't that
bad but i know what u mean, i have troubles trying to find
other like minded acts for our shows, i would like to do
something a bit different but still enjoy it anyhow.
just having the opportunity to play is enough for me.

I'm just not into what i call "metal techno" which to me is
all the distorted drill amen cutups and distorted bassdrums
stuff.

But I absolutely love the fuck out of agressive drum n
bass.

Are there any places in town where you can get cool weird
masks?
I have this thing now about masks. I want heaps of masks and
I want to wear them around.

i was at a friend of a friends place last night, and yeah it
became apparent to me that there is a scene out there in
perth. its rather tied in with ivans crowd. quite a few guys
out there taking it seriously, even though the recurring
themes are rather conventional.. so yes im going to do a bit
of investigating for when ryan gets back in november

you mean the way the scene is run is conventional or the
music is?
either way it shouldn't be a turn off, really...

Pah. Fuck the "scene" anyways I'm rather do it on the ne,t

"the music is whats conventional.. aiming to please

Well in the local scene yeah, but careful not to look down
too hard on conventional music, man, that turns into elitism
real fast and that's ugly stuffz.

As for the BDO - I really don't wanna go coz ...I dunno for
some reason I fucking hate it and it's damn expensive. But
I'll probably end up going.
To see afx.

Or I might not, I dunno.

offline rockenjohnny from champagne socialism (Australia) on 2003-10-20 03:32 [#00909913]

:) just being realistic, a lot of collaborators go in with a
strong idea beforehand of what they want to hear, thats why
a lot of the more experimental stuff is not given a chance.

anybody who has had us play in the past tho, i wouldnt hit
with the conventional tag.. more id refer to them as risk
takers :]

Man I remember this thread was truly great I just got huge
nostalgia reading it, 17 years old I was back then. Next
week I’ll be turning 21, and allot has changed since that
time. Sad to see most of the Perth people have vanished, one
of the greats Od step no longer in the game so I’ve heard
but still posting occasionally on WATMM, donutman
disappeared after the 2004 BDO, dont know what happened to
knobcheese, rF moved to Sydney, bjg never posted again after
moving to Adelaide and alky only posts at WATMM now days.

The only ones left kicking are Princo, Toejam, rockenjohnny,
zero-cool and myself, which I guess is not that bad compared
to other cities. I know it might seem pretentious to some
people but it got me thinking a week after checking Vibert
at the Bakery, is there still a Perth electronic scene
besides the big weekly commercial drum n’ bass & trance
clubs/events? Being the cliché IDM recluse that I am, I
wouldn’t know, it’s only when well established
international acts stop though piss poor Perth on their way
to Melbourne/Sydney that I go out. And thus I'm clueless
with the local happenings on, and that makes me feel really
guilty.

The only Perth acts I know of and remember in the past years
have been Squarepusher in 2001 which I missed, Prefuse 73 in
2003, AFX/Vibert 2004BDO, Merzbow/Whitehouse in 2004,
Hrvatski a few weeks ago and Vibert last week. Oh yeah and
Michael Jackson in 1997 :)

It was great seeing Toejam at the Vibert gig but besides him
there was absolutely no one else I knew. I do remember
though getting vague hand shakes throughout the night from a
jolly drunk white guy that could have been Princo, but I’m
not sure, he didn’t really look like the long haired
Princo in the xlt collage, however he did say that he knew
me and haircuts only run about $15, so it must have been
you?

Continued....

A little investigating has brought me to the Myspace page of
the people responsible for getting vibert to play last week.
Bourgeois Bogan. They must be pretty clued in because Luke was
set to play at another venue (Adelaide or Perth I'm not
sure) and the promoter pulled out so these guys were
recommended instead. They and their friends look like nice
people and all but I presume they are tied in with the new
wave Indi scene what ever magazines call it, which is not
really my thing and I have nothing against.

I'm sure Toejam would agree with me it would be cool to get
out and see some local acts, basic searching has taught me
the only places besides The Bakery that put on regular
acts are Club Zho And aesoteric. I wonder do they
usually put on pumping shows or is it more artistically
based? And who were the 8-bit crew? I must seem pretty
pathetic to people in the know.

Princo if that was you at the show shaking my hand then who
were those two girls at the front hassling Vibert that
looked like they knew you? One of them was Asian and the
other had a tool t-shirt and who was the short black kid in
the hoodie and the tall white guy with dreadlocks?

times change dont they. im a lot more subdued now.

club zho would be the more arts end of the spectrum. a mate
and i went to a Very Serious noise act, some girl playing a
bass guitar through feedback. it was terrible. the small
crowd was basking in it like a good arts audience. my mate
had his head on the table with his hoodie wrapped all the
way around it. i laughed uncontrollably at his gesture the
whole way through the set.

aesoteric was held at the scotsman last time i visited.
thats a decent thing theyve got going on. its only detracted
from by the congested scotsman crowds.

8-bit recordings were noistruct, deadcode, the last ninja,
and orange dust, who splintered early. they started out as
digital hardcore enthusiasts. wayne (noistruct, top bloke)
set up a number of 'void' gigs, and gave my mate and i
(gate) a number of slots. the crew moved over east a few
years back, wayne continued to do shows. hes now focused on
the 'illegal frequencies' radio show on 2ser.

wow, so many people from perth, and i think perth is only
the 5th largest city in australia.

where are the melbournians!

Yeah, I remember this thread! :)

But just reading aquagak's post, I thought that princo was
from melbourne? Or did he move here recently?

I always thought people like aquagak where always 'in the
know' much more than people like me, in fact the only way I
heard that Vibert was playing here was through xltronic.
Same with the JJJ special...

And rockenjohnny thanks for the info, you seem to know heaps
and you've been here for ages as well.

So in conclusion The Bakery has some occasionally decent
stuff going on, as well as the Aesoteric being quite good? I
have no idea what '2ser' is though (the radio show 8-bit
Recordings is on)

But yeah, good local acts will lead to the end of
reclusiveness for us all! :D

Oh by the way...

I realise I sound like a dickhead in some of these old
posts/threads

I was irritatingly naive and optimistic in those days. I was
unfamiliar with the expected ettiquette and general ways of
'aphextwin.nu'....

Oh well, all you can do is learn from experience. I also
rarely start threads these days, when I used to have
a reputation along with Amonbrune for starting the most
threads (some very trivial).

haha :)

While I'm on about past mistakes and while aquagak's online,
I just want to say....

"Sorry aquagak!"

I still feel guilty because a couple of years ago I made a
big fuss about seeing the Didgeridoo vinyl and I was all
snobby and selfish and rude about not lettting anyone else
know which store it was in.

I never ended up buying it. As it turned out it was in
Central Station but now they are closed for good, no one
will get it.

:(

Serves me right I s'pose....
