Who thinks Stereo panning sucks?

I tell you why stereo panning makes you feel sick. Its
because you loose you sense of balance. Like when you're
spun around. But interesting point about creating space
within sounds thats worth following up. I must admit though
I've never been a big panning freak but if it takes the
muddiness out of a selection of sounds then it might have
merit. Venetian Snares uses a lot of mad panning in his drum
tracks and I guess it adds something. But you don't really
take notice of it its more an overall effect thing. Besides
why on earth was this topic dredged up after months?

i'mma add something:

i also like panning because it's the only form of circular
movement that doesn't make me dizzy :D

one thing i just remembered: on the first ramones album, the
guitar and bass are split L-R, and in my old car, the left
speaker didn't work so well. so when i played that cd, all i
heard was bass.

i think panning IS crucial for making the sound really
'tasty'... but for me it always seems to be such a
'delicate' thing that requires a great amount of skill and a
good ear, and sometimes it's really hard to keep the balance
without overdoing this effect... each time i listen to some
stuff by Amon Tobin or Squarepusher i can't help being
really amazed at the way they do programming ( e. g. on Ez
Boogie or Chocolate Lovely)...the tracks sound so natural
that it seems like a live band is performing there.
or take Weather Report for instance. they did such a nice
job with panning on the 'Heavy Weather' album that it's
simply beyond words!

but seriously, i think panning can be extremely addictive
and must be dealt with very carefully... or should be banned
at all ! :D

the 3rd track on download's eyes of stanley pain makes great
use of panning. other tracks on that album too, like the
splashing water track which splashes are 3 dimensionally in
your head.

i like it...
but it can make some troubles in your head on
headphones...and sometimes when you're not in center of the
stero , you might not recognise it....
mine favourite is on howie b's best album snatch....
i like the strange pitch panning effect on kaoss pad when
you talk and listen to yrself in one ear so speedy and in
another so slooow...and then just reverse it in
realtime....it's kool for soem sounds but it can damage the
song too

panning is as important to a good recording as volume and eq
levels.

it's part of what seperates professional sounding music from
amateur souding music. it's a part of recording for a
reason.

Yeah but how ineffective would the end of Mt San Michels Mix
+ St. Micheal's Mount sound without panning.
