MP3 vs WAV/AIFF

I'm at the point where I'm finding that I have to make more
copies of my songs. I've been reading Sound On Sound, and it
seems to be unanimous that MP3's don't quite make it.

At the same time I was reading an interview with Richard D.
James, who was talking about having all of his songs on MP3.
Although I don't know if these were the versions that got on
to Drukqs.

What do you guys/girls do? Should I keep the 24bit/96 khz
versions, or am I the only one that can't hear the
difference?

mp3s are rubbish for quality audio. if you want to archive
your tracks, either write them to a cd as playable audio, or
use some lossless wav compression such as monkey's audio or
shorten to squish them a bit.

once you've compressed music to mp3 it's screwed from then
on. if you decompress it back to wav it won't restore it
back to it's original state. mp3 compresses so much by
'forgetting' bits of the original sound so it can get a
smaller file. it just forgets bits that won't be so obvious
to the ear so you don't notice so much. those bits are gone
and decompressing won't bring them back.

drukqs wasn't made from mp3 files, i would be able to tell!
so if rdj uses mp3, it's not for producing master copies of
his tunes.

damn, i'm like essay-man today.

yeah, i prefer wav's to mp3's. but then the size DOES
matter.

Morton: I love that pic so much I just had to put it in my
membership. And I'm sure it's true.

Westric: It's a wierd question, but what do you notice about
the difference? Do you loose any sounds or just the quality
of them?

hard to put it into words... it's like there's this weird
feathering of the sound... like someone's running one of
those brushes from a drum kit over a dustbin lid about 20
feet away behind a door. only it almost breaks up the music.
i realise that isn't too great an explanation! :D ...but you
can either hear it or you cant. there are sounds that can
just vanish too, or change... depending on the mp3 codec.
xing mp3s tend to sometimes turn snares and hi-hats into
squeaks. it all depends on the track really.

I keep my tracks as wav files... And it takes up 6,53 Go of
hard-drive space.

No. The explaination was good! I think I'll keep my songs in
WAV. even if they're larger.

I'm new here, but I love the fact that you can talk to like
minded people about things like that.

Westric rocks!

Westric is the best!

And man, keep your music in APE format. The program that
makes it is named Monkey's Audio and it compresses songs to
50% (medium average), completely lossless. No "audibly
lossless compression", it's lossless in the means of
information, so the resulting APE file is fully identical to
WAV it was made from. It features a nice Winamp plugin so
you can play APE-compressed songs in a casual way.

RALMFAO Donutman!!! I was listening to Lone Ravers from
Squarepusher when I noticed your cat running from a brown
menace avatar. I couldn't get the picture of that cat
furiously running for it's life to the sound of frantic
squarepusher. I almost pissed my pants laughing!

MP3s are awful, i NEVER listen to them, i prefer vinyl - it
has such a warm quality to it

WAV files are awful too, nothing can beat vinyl

Ya - vinyl has that FULL sound, that can't be captured in
digital. Too bad all the clicks and pops irritate the
absolute shit out of me at times.

I read an interview with the producer of Neil Young, and he
was saying that they've always hated digital, but they both
approve of the new 192khz format on Pro Tools.

I thought I would be content with my 24/96 soundcard, but
then they just keep increasing these numbers.

If I can't notice the difference between wav and mp3, then
there's no way I can figure out the difference in these
higher numbers.

Man, just promise to use APE whenever you need lossless
compact storage for your WAVs. Okay?

Yeah, monkey's audio is the way to go. I've got around
10gigs of lossless audio on my computer. Next week I plan
on buying one of those 200gb drives. They're on sale right
now for $180.

much"...
