i'm studying this in college next year and was wondering if any of you do this as a living or are studying it and if so, any tips, info, or advice you could give me?
links to sites about it would be nice as well.

let us know what you come up with ;)
i've only taken a high school graphic design class, not college... getting lots of experience doing design in the workplace though
personally i see it as mostly a self-taught affair, especially when it comes to individual style

from what i've read and from what my high school comp graphics teacher has told me, it is. apparently 80% of animators/graphics artists are self employed.
i'm actually trying to learn some programs now that weren't offered in high school, such as Maya and lightwave. pretty cool stuff.

I know a decent amount about 3d Studio Max and a bit about Maya. I just do it for fun. What kind of advice or info are you looking for?

Well, the job market for 3d artists isn't very good. They are on a short term contract only, which prevents good job stability. The major employers are 3d graphics for movies, TV shows, and TV commercials and the games industry. There are usually different people who do just the animation side of 3d and then there are others who focus more on modeling... Which are you interested in? The two main software packages that they use for 3d modeling/animation are 3d Studio Max, and Maya. Maya is better for high polycount stuff, so it is used for movies almost exclusively. Max can do low polycount stuff better, so it is used for games, but more and more studios are moving towards Maya as the game hardware can handle higher and higher polycounts. I'd recommend trying to join a SIGGRAPH chapter. www.siggraph.org I am an officer for U of M's SIGGRAPH chapter, and it's a really great organization for people interested in graphics. They have a conference every summer, which would be very beneficial for you to go to if you are planning on going into the graphics industry... Uuuh, I'm just kinda rambling at this point. Hopefully all this stuff is helpful to someone.

do you go to U of M? my cousin goes there and i go up there from time to time.
anyway, that advice is helpful. i'm probably going to concentrate on the animation side of things, but i'll see how things go. i'm a pretty skilled artist, as far as drawing and painting is concerned, and i've been interested in motion and animation for a long time, hence my choice of studying it. thanks for the info, maybe i'll join that organization at some point in college.

I've done 1 year at the academy of interactive entertainment in 3d studio max. Animation is right bee-atch, I still don't get it really, I wanna stick to modelling and texturing :)

Yeah, I go to U of M. I actually just graduated. SIGGRAPH rules! U of M is a good school, but a bad place to go if you want to do animation or modeling. We don't have much in the way of courses for that. SIGGRAPH is trying to push for that, but so far, we have not succeeded.

Yes, I'm studying it next year too. More the openGL coding side of things rather than stuff like Maya. A bit more geeky and technical as well as being maths heavy :/

Cool! I do the programming side also. I'm starting an internship at Microsoft soon with the Xbox team. That should be cool. I mostly program DirectX over OpenGL. I made a pretty cool 3D game if you want to check it out. http://rubblerumble.binarycreativity.com Most of the development was done in 8 weeks...

I did a degree in graphic arts and a course in digital design at the LCP (right next to Richie's bank!)
I'm trying to make the jump to lightspeed, sorry full time design employment at the moment. I'm freelancing, might get a job soon with a local company if things work to plan... Still working the odd few hours in a booze shop to make up the extra as well.
I'm keen to get into 3d studio max, specially using it with flash.

tips and advice? get as much design software as you can and play with it so you are familiar with the various packages once you start in class. Enjoy it.
