hahah I know, I knwo
titsworth I would not say gang starr is extremely mainstream.. I just think they're at the most mainstream point of the underground.. they're mainstream ..but not extremely
nas was VERY commercial for awhile.. keep in mind what a difference there was between albums one and two. (though in hindsight, it's really not that commercial.. but that's because things have gotten so rediculous since)
nas did a lot of shitty commercial things.. need I remind you "shorty, you can hold my IIICE, if you back it uuup blah blah blahh.. now lets say you ooowwe me" ..I'd say he owes me for "...I Am" ...many r'nb remixes etc..'dr. knockboots'..
he made two very shitty commercial albums w/ maybe one or two tracks (usually the token underground/street-sounding tracks by dj premier) for the 'true' .. his acknowledgement of where the many who love illmatic think he should be.. he's also on MURDER INC (!!?!?!) now so..

theo, gang starr have sold millions... they're the least mainstream on my list, but still mainstream. i also meant to add mobb deep.
i will never believe nas' "it was written" was a commercial sellout. that album's a classic. it's just DIFFERENT from "illmatic". i think his 3rd album is somewhat commercial (though only some songs) and 4th album from what i hear is very commercial. 5th and 6th aren't commercial at all, they're just successful. i want to emphasize that just cos you don't like a song or just cos he's rapping about something you don't approve of doesn't make it commercial.
i don't know why you think he's on murder inc., that was just a bad move he considered for a few weeks before coming to his senses.

Good call Bill. Fear Of A Black Planet is one of the most impotant rap albums of our time.
Maybe I'm biased because it was THE album to truely open my mind to new ideas and music, but at the end of the day, nobody will ever beat Public Enemy.
p.s. I just heard the Ghost Dog soundtrack and it was really cool.
