let's not be absolutely retarded, ok?
timberlake is an adequate singer and adventurous in the studio, but all the music is written by the neptunes or timbaland and almost all of the lyrics are written by a team called "the underdogs" (plus pharrell williams i'm sure helped with some hit choruses).

to be fair, songwriters performing their own lyrics and music is still a relatively recent phenomenon (late '60s to today). plenty of amazing performers don't sing their own lyrics (R.I.P. layne staley; he's just ONE great example, though he did write a few AiC songs). i don't look down on pop artists for not writing their own songs as long as the material they use is meaningful (R.I.P. aaliyah) and not trite (n'sync).

point taken, but I find it hard to distinguish.
nsync = pop, so they sing about popular things, isn't that meaningful? They are singing about what exactly defines their genre
I'd rather leave that discussion to people who listen to Clear Channel stations, but my beef is how does passion come out of music that you didn't create.
forget the Funk Brothers, i'm talking about now.

Brian Wilson didn't write the lyrics for Pet Sounds, but music and words rarely sound more sincere than it did there.

I think we can safely say there is a lot worse out there than Justin Timberlake.
Besides who cares, its whats popular. Anyone the chasm between the underground and the charts isn't as far as everyone imagines. Afterall its only a question as to what people hear on daytime radio, if Aphex and others got the same airplay and exposure. They'd be in the charts too, no sweat. Warp etc had chart success in the past so its not impossible. But they have been and are ploughing a different path. They've broadly speaking had a long term approach in mind and its paid off. The likes of Warp and Rephlex haven't really put their collective minds to the chart situation seriously yet I imagine. And its likely that they wont ever. But I for one don't believe the day when things change is never coming. The future is an open book.

yea i'm doing a research project on IDM and i found out that at one time warp commanded 2% of all music sales in the UK! this was back in the early days of LFO, Nightmares on Wax, and a bunch of artists who we haven't heard from in 10 years.

i'd rather listen to someone who has a big influence on their own music and lyrics... thats just my personal preference.
Its ok someone working with someone else (like bjork and matmos) but the artist who's name is on the cd should have put the most work into the record.
i'm not sure who did the most on the timberlake record but if the neptunes did most of it, shouldn't it be Neptunes with guest singer Timberlake? :)

No, it doesn't matter. Thats the way the industry works.
That said the only game to be in as a musician is the game where you make the music in its entirity, that way you make the most dough. ;-)
