the images and vivid experiences that emerge as you are falling asleep are called *hypnogogic* phenomena, and are distinct from lucid dreaming. for me, i usually hear snippets of conversation, or see relatively static images, people sitting at tables, standing around, nothing particularly interesting. in fact, the conversations i hear are usually quite boring, tedious and common like most conversations you might overhear. this morning i had an unusual series of hypnopompic images (so called when they occur as you are waking). nothing as elaborate and colorful as those recounted here, though.

Very true then, I have noticed this hypnogogic state. In particular, one time I was curled up on the cold floor of my friends room trying to use two beanbag chairs to keep me warm on the uncomfortable surface, so I never really went into a deep sleep all night.
At one point, there was a very vivid image of a poloroid photograph and I could hold it and inspect it very closely. It was some sort of party, or reception, and the flash illuminated everyones faces very clearly, it looked maybe outside, nighttime, and for some reasons there were large girders and i-beams in the background, like in an unfinished building.
As with hearing talking or conversations, I most often hear someone talking about random shit, i'm nto sure if it makes sense, since my reason in those kind of states is messed up. But more interesting is when I'm reading something in a hypnogogic state. I haven't had a chance to remember what it was and write it down. It would be interesting to see what was there, since I can never remember.

It’s happening again. Why is this happening to me? He had once again slipped into the paralyzed, coma-like state which he feared so gravely. Not awake but not really asleep, he seemed to have no control over his body, but his mind raced. I’ve gotta move my head, gotta wake up, gotta get outta here! Overwhelmed by the fear and the numbing, fuzzy feeling creeping over him, Don began to panic. I’ve gotta wake up! Now! Just wake up and you’ll be fine, wake up quick before they come! But it was too late. They were already there. They’re here, I can feel them! Who are they? What do they want? Oh please god don’t let em get me, don’t let em take me! Wake up, open your eyes and they won’t be able to do anything, won’t be able to hurt me. Just jump up! They encircled his bed, all huddling around him and staring, but not making a sound. Don’s panic increased as he felt them begin to lean in, growing closer to him. GET UP DAWM IT! JUST WAKE THE FUCK UP! He was concentrating as hard as he could, channeling all the energy he had in an attempt to brake the state he was in and plunge back into full consciousness. Suddenly, a piercing scream knifed through his mind, and for a moment Don thought his head might explode. Then, he realized he could see one of them, very vaguely out of the corner of his eyes. It looked at him, into his eyes, and for a split second he knew what it wanted. Oh my god.... I need to get out of here now. Just concentrate dammit. Just wake up.... waaaake uuupppp.... NOW!!! Just then he was hit by a strong sensation, like a hard blow directly to the top of the head but not really painful, and his room came crashing down around him.

whenever I have important and daunting things on my mind, and I have one of these 'pre-sleep dreams' I always end up having nightmares,
also, because I'm in a half dream state, and not thinking all too rationally, my mind fills up with all the ideas of the things that can go wrong, which only makes things worse.
when I got kicked out of my old home, I couldn't sleep for 3 days straight, I just couldn't get it off my mind, I didn't have a clue what would happen to me, but now I
am living with a friend, and my leg has almost completely healed, and I'm returning to work, so everything should be back to normal soon, but now I have the problem of worrying about finding a new place and saving money for a bond and such, and I have been sleeping less lately because of it,
my point is, it seems like the pressures of life seem to directly affect my sleeping and dreaming.

OMG peleton. It's funny you say that.
During my first experience (the lamp, cold, ears buzzing), I had a gut feeling that I had just been abducted by aliens. I'm not shitting. It wasn't an afterthought either. It was a present possibility that I consciously remember considering.
When my ears began to buzz, everything went white (my eyes were closed however). When everything stopped, I was staring at the ceiling and completely unaware of where I was or what had just happened.
I swear to god for a second I considered that I might be in some sort of alien containment cell. I couldn't move, I just kept staring at the ceiling and I couldn't recognize it as "my" ceiling. Eventually, my head jerked forward and I caught a glimpse of the rest of my room and I slowly reverted back to normal heart rate and respiration rate. I'm not joking man. I was VERY surprised to hear you say that.
One of the most interesting things is that BOTH accounts were when I was away from home. I'm pretty sure that both of them also occured within a 2 year timespan.

i had a kinda pre-sleep dream about a year ago that went like this:
i was listening to lp5 as i was going to sleep, and as my mind was beginning to get sidetracked, 'rae' came on and twisted my thoughts into thinking the song was a father teaching his son to ride the bike.. the beats are the bike, the pad sounds are the father and the 'lead' is the child.. the first section is the father showing his son how to ride the bike (an example), then the son gets on (its one of those two-seat bikes) and the part where the song slows down is where the father gets off the bike and his son attempts to ride by himself, very slowly.

I often listen to a clock tick, and then fill in the ticks with random thought. And evey word I think of can't last longer than the miliseconds the clock says tick. Makes me sleep every time
